Most woodworkers know George Nakashima for his stunning live-edge furniture, but few realize his impact extended beyond design—into global peace efforts. His Nakashima Foundation for Peace continues his mission of unity through craftsmanship, creating monumental Peace Altars around the world.

Just as Nakashima blended design with philosophy, I’m bringing my woodwork and word-work together on Substack. A while back, I built a Nakashima-style walnut coffee table, and now I’m writing about the craft—starting with a piece that reflects both the hands-on process and the deeper stories behind it.

For all the bread heads, the sourdough guys and chicks who dig ryes, this bread cutting board has a removable tray to catch crumbs.

You can use a bread bow (as shown) or slice between the grooves for the perfect slice every time.

Live Edge Walnut Semi-Hollow Form

Finished this twice-turned bowl that started as green wood (still wet) and was turned thick, sealed, and set aside for three months before I found its final shape and form.

I made this to gift the kind couple that planted the tree and donated it to me 36 years after. The tree needed to come down to avoid damaging their property.

They knew the value of the burl and wanted to gift it to a craftsman to keep it from becoming firewood.

Very grateful to have the opportunity to work with it and exited to share it with them before turning some of the remaining pieces they shared with me!
