Behind the Seams: Why Do Stone Countertops Have Seams?

Seams are a normal part of many stone countertop installations-and sometimes, they’re necessary.

Granite, quartz, and quartzite slabs only come in certain sizes, so larger countertops, long runs, L-shaped layouts, islands, or spaces with tricky access may require more than one piece.

Seams can also help:

- Make heavy stone safer to transport and install
- Work around corners, walls, appliances, and cabinets
- Reduce the risk of cracking during installation
- Make the best use of the slab and your layout

A professionally installed seam should be tight and secure, but it won’t be completely invisible. Every countertop project is a little different, and seam placement is part of the planning that goes into creating a beautiful, durable finished product.

We’re still raising money to help a local Amish cabinet maker rebuild after his shop was completely destroyed by fire.

Thank you to everyone who has donated and shared the fundraiser so far. The support has been a meaningful reminder of how strongly our community comes together when a neighbor is facing a difficult loss.

There is still a long road ahead as he works to replace his tools, equipment, materials, and workspace. Every donation, no matter the amount, helps move him one step closer to rebuilding and getting back to work.

Calacatta vs. Carrara — what’s the difference?

When it comes to marble-look quartz, the biggest difference is usually the veining.

Calacatta styles tend to have a brighter white background with larger, bolder, more dramatic veins. They’re a great choice when you want the countertop to stand out and become a focal point.

Carrara styles usually have softer, finer, more subtle veining. The overall look is quieter and more classic, making it easy to pair with a wide variety of cabinets and finishes.

In short: Calacatta = bold and dramatic. Carrara = soft and subtle.
