The herringbone bed is done! After a day of sanding and a couple days of applying finish it’s now in place. Very satisfied with how this one came out. Also some photos of a couple side tables from a little while ago. These were tests whether I preferred the chevron pattern or herringbone. And I got to mill the little cord keepers out of some brass stock I had on hand. Keeps charging cords nice and tidy.

As I wrote last post, I needed the side rails to appear to be the same thickness as the legs, and that would be evident once shaping took place. Well here we go. The legs get turned from squared corners into 1 1/2” rounds via a 3/4” roundover router bit on all sides. Where the side rails meet with the legs, I want the roundover profile to continue throughout the length of the bed. Ideally the transition from leg to rail is seamless, and that happens to be the case this time; thankfully.

This week was spent on the side rails and the frames for the head and footboard.
For aesthetic reasons that will be evident once final shaping of the bed is done, I needed the side rails to be the same width as the bedposts. So I essentially made an I-beam by calling the 1” rails with some 1 9/16” caps.
As for the panel frames, these involved some meticulous planning and machining to get the profiles I envisioned. Happy with how they turned out. Once they’re glued up I can mark the tenon locations on their respective posts and mill out their mating mortises.
Once the joinery is done then it will be on to shaping the posts and rails, pre-finishing the pieces, then final assembly. Finally.

Since my last post, lots of action taking place. Head and footboard posts shaped and mortised, side rails and stretchers milled and tenoned, slat rails milled and installed, threaded inserts installed, and 30 maple slats milled to thickness. It doesn’t seem like it, but the finish line is close on this one.

Just shy of a weeks worth of cutting, gluing, planing and sanding and all sides of the head and footboards are ready for finish. As there was no real way to clamp each tile I knew there was going to be some heaving as the glue set as shown in the first picture. The worst of the pieces probably had to plane off 1/16”. That doesn’t sound like much but the pile of shavings says otherwise.

Latest project underway and it’s feeling more like a flooring/tiling job than a piece of furniture just yet.
This will be another white oak bed and I’ve been thinking of doing a herringbone pattern for the headboard and footboard for some time.
Using quartersawn and rift sawn material for the pattern because it looks awesome and dimensionally stable. The completed pattern shown will be the back of the headboard as these pieces were a bit of a wild grain to be front and center. And it gave me a chance to practice on a side that won’t be seen.
Had to process over 225 individual “tiles” for all 4 sides. Using 2.5”x10” tiles each planed to 5/32” to allow planing and sanding to level out any humps and bumps.

Since I’m on a posting binge, putting the question out there if anyone is interested in woodworking lessons. I’ve started helping out an aspiring woodworker, and enjoyed sharing my techniques and tips to save a newbie some of the frustrations I dealt with teaching myself.

If there’s a project you’ve been wanting to tackle, or just taking up an interest, I’d love to have you to the shop and help you along.

I know we have Sawdust Studios in CoMo, but as I understand it they don’t really offer instruction, just shop space. Could be nice to have someone show tricks of the trade.

If interested, just message me. Thanks!

Been more than a minute since my last post. Still going at it…just not posting on facebook so much. Just finished a couple personal projects in between commissions. Two queen-sized beds for my kids (young adults, I guess). One of white oak, the other walnut. Both with maple under carriages.

Delivery day for a repeat client. Always appreciative of the opportunity to take a general idea (in this case a desk w 2 drawers) and run with whatever design my mind comes up with. I love making things for folks who appreciate quality and use of good materials.

Latest items out of the shop. A set of 4 Danish-modern inspired counter height stools.

These are constructed of white oak (stained jet black) and Danish cord.

Each stool has roughly 325’ of Danish cord wrapped and woven to become the seat.

But that 325’ of paper cord is so comfortable.

I’d love the chance to make more of these (wink, wink, nudge nudge)

These would look stunning in unstained white oak or walnut. Black cord may also be an option (hard to tell with supply issues these days).

Finally back in production after a multi-month hiatus. If you know me personally then you know what’s up. For those who don’t, if these photos seem a bit brighter and if the shop seems a little less dreary and a LOT bigger…it’s because I have a new shop! That’s for another post.

Today I’m just excited to share the first piece of non-shop furniture coming out of the new space.

A small walnut desk featuring shop-sawn veneer. It’s a variation on a desk I’ve made a couple times now. It’s design is simple and sturdy with a style that I hope stands the test of time.

Been a minute since I last posted on Facebook; I've been turning more to Instagram () for posting on projects.

But I'm still at it, still churning out projects. This latest is a dresser, constructed of Red Oak, finished with Rubio Monocoat Cotton White. The pendant drawer pulls are hand made out of Beech.
