This summer, Sawdust Studios is offering five unique woodworking camps for young makers ages 4–18 — and every single camper goes home with projects they built with their own hands. No experience needed. Just curiosity and the courage to try.

There’s something different about a handmade thing.
You can feel the hours in it. The grain that decided its own direction. The tiny imperfections that make it impossible to copy exactly twice.
No templates. No CNC. No tracing.
Every spoon we make starts as a rough piece of walnut and is shaped completely by hand, letting the grain guide the final form. That’s why no two are ever exactly alike.
Then we finish each piece with pure walnut oil and our own handcrafted wood wax, bringing out the depth, warmth, and character that only real wood can have.
That’s the beauty of craftsmanship — turning a tree into something people will reach for every single day. 🌿🪵

From walnut to wow!
What starts as a black walnut sapling here in Missouri can become something that lasts for generations.
These pieces — lathe-turned bowls, charcuterie boards, and this Missouri cutout — all began as Missouri black walnut. From the standing tree, to the slab, to the finished piece, every step of the process happens with craftsmanship, patience, and an appreciation for the wood itself.
Missouri is famous for its black walnut, and for good reason. The grain, color, and character are unlike anything else.

Look what Cruz made for the market.
He doesn’t get a chance to just make things for fun on a whim very often… but every once in a while something like this happens.
How long do you think it took him to make this?
If you’ve ever taken a class with us, you’ve probably seen how ridiculously fast he can turn a chunk of wood into something beautiful.
But what IS it? A chicken? A fish? A leaf?

Our apprentices have officially started this month’s apprenticeship project: steam-bent catch-all trays.
This project has been on our “someday” list for a long time, and we finally decided to dive in headfirst — learning right alongside our apprentices as we design, shape, steam, bend, and build these beautiful walnut trays from scratch.
Over the next few weeks they’ll: • glue up tray bottoms
• mill and shape the forms
• cut thin strips for the steam-bent rims
• build and use a steam chamber
• bend the sides and assemble everything into finished heirloom-quality trays
Last month’s project was collapsible cedar camp chairs, and they turned out AWESOME. Every month brings a completely different woodworking challenge, and honestly, the apprenticeship has become our favorite thing we offer at Sawdust Studios.
There’s something really special about consistently showing up, learning new skills, and building things you never thought you could make with your own hands. It genuinely becomes life-changing for a lot of people.
If you’ve ever thought about making woodworking part of your life, this is a really good month to jump in.

From apprentice to maker.
This is the first piece we’re featuring from one of our own — Dylan, a longtime member of Sawdust Studios.
This lathe-turned cherry bowl measures 10” across, 4” tall, and about 3” deep at its lowest point. The natural color variation in the cherry gives it depth and warmth, and every detail has been carefully shaped and finished by hand.
Dylan started here as an apprentice and has been part of the shop for years. Pieces like this are exactly what makes this place special — people learning, growing, and turning raw material into something lasting.
Now it’s available in The Store at Sawdust Studios.
