RUG CARE 101

Take care of your fine area rugs and they’ll reward you with a lifetime of beauty and comfort. These rug care tips and rug cleaning suggestions will help you get there.

All eyes are on your gorgeous new rug, and you’d like to keep it that way. With a little vigilance, you can preserve a rug’s good looks—from silks and shags to hand-knotted wools, the heirlooms of tomorrow.

Rug care and rug cleaning requirements are generally determined by a rug’s fiber and construction, but the following rules apply to all rugs, regardless of content—or cost:

Use a rug pad. A rug pad will improve a rug’s appearance and prevent it from slipping. It should be about an inch smaller than the rug (excluding fringe) so it won’t show.
Vacuum lightly once a week, including the underside—more often in high-traffic areas—avoiding fringe. Protect the integrity of your rugs by using an upright vacuum with the be**er bar raised to the highest level; or alternatively, a less abrasive canister or stick vacuum.
Don’t expose to heat or sunlight for extended periods of time.
Rotate rugs periodically. It will allow for more even wear, especially in high-traffic areas.
Have rugs professionally cleaned. Depending on its location and how much traffic it gets, a rug should have a professional rug cleaning about once a year.
Take care of stains quickly. Using a clean, white absorbent cloth, blot stains immediately. Never rub or use products that contain silicone as they tend to accelerate soiling.
