build DAY THREE
I can tell people are getting up a little slower.
Breakfast at the church. Mad respect for the breakfast and dinner crews! Each person signed up for different tasks (ex: Dave was head of clean up crew and I was a part of VBS/housing gifts) and everyone had a "see a job, do a job" mentality. The days were long and exhausting and everyone pitched in, but those people deserve gold stars!
We got to know so many of our church family! My introverted personality was rather enjoying the sleep away camp camaraderie more than I thought I would.
For context: we (Gordon's team) could see Kevin's team at the top of the hill. (There was a 9 inch space only a few could access to do the blackboard, chicken wire, and stucco- it was crazy to watch!) Devin's team could see them from afar but not us. Todd's team was further away from all of us on the hill.
And crazy enough, another Casas crew was working down the street from us. AND Dave and Riley saw the family they built the house for last year. It was so neat to see their joy seeing them!
I am a big fan of the show the Amazing Race. And it felt like we were on our own whirlwind of a season. We could see the progress of the other team, but we wouldn't really know where any one else was at until we got back, stories, progress, and sunburns compared.
As hard work as it was, it was FUN.
And satisfying. The ultimate LEGO build. Casas por Cristo style.
With stucco and electricity!
What a crash course in so many trades and mutual sacrifice.
We were fed again. AND AGAIN. First meal we channeled our inner hobbit to accept 2nd breakfast. She wouldn't take no for an answer. And it was cooked perfectly on her stove with propane, that ran out while cooking, so she had her daughter run to the neighbors to get more. My heart melted at the love she felt for us and us for her. Eggs, hand made tortillas, and beans.
She invited me, and others, to her table.
As I sat, knowing the massive workload we had ahead, I sat and enjoyed a delicious meal filling me body and soul.
I weirdly felt at home.
Maybe it's because we don't have our own home?
Maybe it's because I have felt missions calling us for some time?
Maybe I was delirious from the lack of sleep and dehydration.
I didn't get to sit as much and I was running off fumes.
The day was long- finishing chicken wire, drywall, electrical (hallelujah for a ceiling fan!! and outlets!!), writing verses on the studs, mixing and applying stucco, texturizing with care.
What makes a house?
What makes a home?
At one point I looked over and saw Riley and Easton eating soup next to Maria's group of friends from her church serenading us, encouraging us as we were dragging in the afternoon heat.
And it felt so normal.
I knew I had asked a lot of them. But I knew they had it in them. They worked hard, but even more so, they loved hard. Playing and laughing with the kids, learning games and trying to speak each other's language. My favorite part of the day, was getting the neighborhood kids together in Maria's house, doing a simple Bible lesson, and seeing the excitement over the Beanie Babies I brought (thank you Facebook Marketplace!) was truly priceless!
There were times we didn't think we were going to finish in time. But we did. And we did it well.
After dinner and devotional and a welcome shower, I couldn't sleep.
The next day was dedication and giving them the keys. I couldn't process so I just cried.
