Our Latest Project: Saving the Century Dresser
When we came upon this dresser, it had definitely seen better days. It had been refinished, then stripped, left outside in the rain, and ultimately abandoned. We knew with a little bit of work, it could be saved (or we hoped at the very least).
Upon further inspection we found that this was a Century brand dresser, one of the world’s largest privately owned manufacturer of luxury furniture. With a sigh of relief, we decided, it has good bones. It was a true Mid-Century piece, manufactured in the early 1960’s. It was originally covered in a mahogany veneer - most of which had been completely stripped away.
After a few days of staring at the massive undertaking we had lugged home, we got straight to work. Peeling off chipping veneer, gluing broken drawers back together, cleaning, sanding, more cleaning and sanding, filling holes. The list goes on; eventually we had something that almost resembled a dresser. From there, Jeremiah worked his magic. He got to work painting, masterfully staining, and eventually sealing in a lacquer clear coat. The dresser had been sucessfully resuscitated.
After a quick photo shoot, the dresser was ready to go up for sale. Before I even had a chance to finish writing this post, it was sold. After days of hard work, it was gone in under an hour. I’ll admit, I was a little sad to see it go, but I’m happy to report that the old Century dresser went to a loving home and will live to see another day!
