Sometimes a project is just an all out brawl to get the materials to behave and the design adjustments to work (we customize to the patrons desires). This is one of those, but it's starting to come together...a little behind schedule, a few broken things and a bruised ego.

Completion is the triumph.

The good news is that I have also been building jigs and patterns to ramp up the efficiency for the next sets in the pipeline. The folks who ordered this asked for a couple things that made the old design sing. This swing is everything you could ever ask for: higher back for max lounging, ergonomic seat groove, cup holders that will fit the yeti or similar tumblers, nice back pitch to lean and watch the clouds, and sturdy enough for a whole gaggle of grand kids.

Pressure treated lumber is dangerous right now! Why? The pressure treatment process involves soaking the wood in chemicals to treat them, and right now mills and retailers are CRANKING this stuff out.

Every year when tax refunds and bonuses hit for people they have the funds to build and buy new things for their homes, and as such, lumber is getting moved quickly and doesn't have time to dry. If you plan to finish: paint/stain/seal/coat/seals in coats, ask your builder or contractor about the drying process. Low and slow is the tempo. A quick build and finished before the wood dries = peeling paint, or mold built up behind the finish.

It's been a comedy of errors this week....and its only Monday.

Our animals (kids + 4-leggers) have been beating the hell out of this table, and this thing still kicks ass.

It’s been moved around, put on display, used daily, beat up, and it just keeps going. That’s the difference between cheap big box furniture and a handcrafted custom piece built the right way.

Some of the pieces we built 15+ years ago are still kicking ass too. Real wood and real craftsmanship age a whole lot differently than disposable furniture.

We’ve personally spent thousands on CARD-BÖRD junk and “assembly required” furniture because it was fast and easy. Some of it didn’t even survive a move. Some of the “name brand” stuff didn’t last much longer either. Mac in Houston sayin he'll "Save You Money!"...yeah, and there's beach front property in Kansas. 😉

Meanwhile, this table just keeps going.

Eventually we realized we were wasting money replacing disposable furniture instead of investing in pieces actually built to last.

Now we’re upgrading our home one solid piece at a time with furniture that can actually handle real life.
