Last month a lady reached out about having her Mother’s Cedar Hope Chest repaired and refinished. The shellac was brown and clumped and the cedar had cracks in various places.
Upon inspection we found out that J.P. Friddle from Eden, GA built the chest in October 1967 (he engraved his info on the back). The Cedar Hope chest was 55 years old and still in one piece. My respect goes out to Mr. Friddle, you built an awesome hope chest that has lasted 2 generations.
The chest got sanded down and all of the cracks got repaired. I even filled in Mr. Friddle’s engraving with black wood wax so it would stand out. Once all the prep work was complete it got a bunch of coats of Semigloss Polycrylic and it’s ready for the next 55 years.
