The Potomac River fish report May 15-June 2
The river temps are ranging from 72-80 degrees but that’s inconsequential at this time of year except for maybe - snakeheads. The river has a little floating debris from the rain a week or so ago. The lack of aquatic grass can make some of the tributaries a little off color but most of the river has good fish catching conditions. There is milfoil in only certain small areas but the hydrilla has started to grow as well as pondweed and wild celery. There is aquatic grass on the main river and that’s going to play for post spawn fish. In a couple of weeks I will estimate that the hydrilla will be throughout most of the creeks. However, docks and wood are still very good choices to fish.
Most of the bass im catching are post spawn and they are in areas that have bait. The full moon brought in a shad spawn in aquia and the fish were on a mud flat - no cover - chasing the food. I’ve been fishing docks and wood throughout the river. I’ve been using a white chatterbait to cover water and then a creature bait or rage grub for more specific presentations.
The frog is my love and my nemesis. It is frog season for me and I can’t put it down. The frog and snakeheads get me in trouble only because I lose touch with other patterns on the river. It’s also easy and very hard for clients. It’s easy because it weedless and can be thrown into shallow cover. It’s hard because it must be thrown accurately and for the inexperienced to catch the fish that strike. There are a lot of fish shallow - most of the fish are shallow - but they will be in cover. You can flip and pitch shallow cover - I won’t be doing that with clients - or you throw a frog. That frog and those snakeheads have taught me a lot about shallow water bass - mostly that there are always bass very shallow. I throw the frog all day especially when hard weedlines haven’t developed in the creeks.
The main river from occoquan to Pohick has grass and a lot of bait. The challenge is to find the bass in that expansive area. Lilly pads around marsh island are getting hammered. The grass at mouth of occoquan has been hammered. The aquia grass at mouth has all but disappeared. The pondweed is prevelant in potomac creek but I haven’t been down there for two weeks. The backs of the creek are not quite ready but it won’t be long.
In sum - it’s all about decisions based on tides and what you feel comfortable doing as far as techniques. I make decisions with clients based on fishing experience. Last night I had two people that had rarely used lures for bass and weren’t great casters. I went to a grass flat and stayed there - throwing dropshots. It was slow but it produced fish. After the trip, I went out by myself and threw a chatterbait on laydowns. I caught 15 bass in a half hour. I still made the right decision with the clients because my experience has taught me to not put people in a position to fail. However, if you are a great caster, you can pitch/flip, you know how to Rip a chatterbait, you know how to read and fish a lay down, you can skip under a dock, etc - the entire river opens up to you. If not - then stay in areas that allow you to catch fish without necessarily having great fishing experience like a dropshot on a grass flat.
As far as snakeheads, I’m more than a little frustrated. This has been a common theme for me in May so I’m not desperate - yet. However, I’ve had three trips in last few days with good fisherman and so far I’ve had 3 strikes and 2 follows. Perhaps - I continue to go to the same areas and I’m fishing past experiences but either I make a change or accept that my snakehead days will never be repeated as they were just a few years ago. I caught big snakeheads in March and April so there may not be as many but I know they are around. The good thing is I’m guiding a lot and the bad thing is I’m guiding a lot - so there’s little time to thoroughly scout. I did go to aquia and Potomac more than any time on my life but I’m not traveling that far when I’m not seeing much of a difference. I went into the backs of northern areas - even got grounded - didn’t see enough to risk be grounded. I’ve been to little hunting, pononkey, Piscataway - it’s just
Difficult - period.
This week has been frustrating so I’ll take the day off. I’ll go to my workout classes and enjoy my life outside of fishing. I’ll go back tomorrow and put the boat into areas that hold fish and have everybody start casting. It will get better. Again - it’s all about perspective - I’m catching fish but I need more fish than what I’m catching and I need easy fish for people that fish for fun. I’m having a little difficulty with finding a bunch of easy fish. That’s it - enjoy your fishing and pick up your trash.
