This week’s episode of “How Much Sawdust Can One Human Create?” features a custom American chestnut four-legged table base headed out for a 9’6” tabletop.

The customer wanted something simple, clean, and chunky… so we went with 3.5” square legs and 3” aprons, but skipped the traditional bead detail for a smoother look. The walnut pegs were also sanded flush instead of leaving them proud, which gives the base a cleaner and more modern feel while still keeping all the old-school joinery hidden underneath.

And because nothing around here can ever just be “standard,” this base was custom-sized so the tabletop will overhang exactly 2” on the ends and 1.5” on the sides.

Little details like this are what make custom furniture fun. Every customer has a different vision, and somehow a pile of reclaimed barn beams slowly turns into a future family heirloom.

It’s kind of funny when you think about it…

This 34” round lazy Susan is going on top of one of our 70” round American chestnut tables and is built from 300+ year old reclaimed barn wood. Wood that already lived an entire life before ever making it into our shop.

At 1.125” thick this thing has some serious weight to it, and one detail most people will never see is I actually inlay metal into the underside to help keep it from ever wanting to curl over time. Hidden strength matters when you’re building pieces meant to last for generations.

What makes me laugh is this wood survived centuries of New England weather, old barns, and changing generations… only to now spend the next chapter of its life spinning around meatballs, mashed potatoes and somebody yelling “pass the butter.”

That’s the part I love most about what I do. These pieces become part of family memories. Holidays, birthdays, loud dinners, late night talks and everything in between.

Not bad for a 300 year old barn beam.

We are closed today as we celebrate my son’s 11th birthday.

One of the projects I’m currently working on involves a customer who asked if I could transform her existing 8’ table into two separate tables — a 4’ table and a 3’ table. The goal is to reuse as much of the original base material as possible to create two new custom bases, which will then be finished in a custom black paint.

This was a truly custom piece from start to finish. The customer came into the shop with a unique challenge, and I was fortunate to be part of the solution.

In their finished basement, there was a section with a lower ceiling that had become a hazard for the taller members of the family. To address that, I built a one-of-a-kind 52” x 59” New England white pine table, designed at a 36” height to work perfectly within the space. The base was color-matched to their existing white trim, allowing it to blend seamlessly into the room.

Projects like this are always rewarding. Seeing the customer’s reaction when it all came together made the entire process that much more worthwhile.

What’s happening in the shop right now 👇

1–3
Reclaimed American chestnut dining set
1.5” thick x 48” wide x 96” long
Paired with a 96” bench that we split into two 48” benches
When pushed together, the grain lines up perfectly like it was never cut

This set sits on matching metal X-bases tied together with 300+ year old American chestnut stretchers
We worked in a dark walnut tone to match what the client was after while still letting the character of the wood show through

4–5

Custom fit set at 1.5” thick x 44” wide x 94” long

Built specifically for the client’s space with a matching chestnut bench

This one is sitting on a heavy, old school trestle base that we kept natural to let the wood speak for itself

6–7

70” round top at 1.5” thick

Going on a custom C pedestal

Right now the pedestal is upside down getting sanded and prepped
We’ll be matching the paint color to the client’s chairs

On the underside of the top, C-channel straps are getting installed and will be flush

This helps keep the top stable and prevents any movement or curling over time

8–9

8’ table currently in the shop
We’re keeping the top natural and staining the trestle base to match the client’s existing chairs

This is one of those builds where everything needs to tie into what they already have, not just stand on its own

10
White pine table just getting started
52” wide x 59” long and will finish at 36” tall

This one will sit on shaker legs with a custom colored base

11
Murphy supervising the entire operation as usual

12
And the whale still holding down the showroom

A lot going on behind the scenes, but this is the part of the process where everything starts to take shape

This table was custom sized to fit this nook perfectly. It’s for one of our neighbors here on Main Street in Chatham, MA, and will be part of a rental property—meaning it will see many different families and guests gathered around it for years to come.
This build features a 1.125” thick American chestnut top with very softened corners, set on a painted chestnut shaker trestle base.
Like many of our tables, once it’s in your home and you have guests over, it becomes our best form of advertisement. With rental properties, that reach grows even further—we’ve had customers come to us from Maine all the way down to Florida after experiencing our work firsthand.
We’ve got you covered.

Here’s a follow-up on the custom color metal X-frame trestle. This table measures 1.5” thick, 46” wide, and 120” long. It’s crafted from American chestnut that’s approximately 300–350 years old. It was delivered the other day and is staying right here on Cape Cod.

This beauty was delivered out to Western Massachusetts and measures 1.5” thick, 46” wide, and a custom 84” in length. It sits on our American chestnut X-base with custom overhangs.
I also built a matching bench to pair with the table, designed one foot shorter to give extra elbow room for anyone seated at the ends. They completed the set with our square-legged natural Windsor chairs.
This table is ready to be the centerpiece for years of great memories.

We will be closed to the public for the next few days while we work to clear our parking lot and catch up on current orders. With the cold temperatures, this process is taking a bit longer than expected.
We appreciate your patience and understanding. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.
Stay warm! In this photo is another one of our square tables. This American chestnut piece measures 54” x 54” and was designed to fit the nook perfectly while remaining fully functional. The base was kept natural, and the customer chose a 3” apron between the 3.5” Shaker-style legs.
