Week 6. The first half of the program flew by. 4 weeks in on my case project in Ash. Panels glued up and flattened. Miters cut and reinforced with L tenons. Double tapered sliding dovetails fit for my horizontal dividers. Dropdown dovetails for my web frame. Rock solid housed stub tenon for my vertical divider. Still lots of work ahead. Enjoying every minute of it. Also I threw a coat of finish on my bench project. I’ll need to get some better photos or that.

Three frames in spalted maple. Spalting is a fungal discoloration found in wood experiencing the initial stages of decay. As different fungi colonies enter the wood they begin to compete with one another. In order to protect there resources from competition each colony forms defense boundaries throughout the wood. These boundaries lines are referred to as zone lines and they appear in the lumber as dark black and brown lines and streaks. Once the lumber is appropriately dried to prevent further decay. These lines become an eye catching feature. They add beautiful contrast and sense of unpredictably to any piece. More importantly they serve as a conversation starter about science and nature and our relationship with our environment. The same can be said about the art featured inside these frames. Works by and please check out the work by these talented artist and show support by purchasing prints

“Holding together”
My wood-hoarding habits have compelled me to save a pile of interesting maple logs cut from a tree experiencing heart rot (a fungal disease that causes decay in the inner heart wood off the tree). Over several years the logs dried and shrunk. Cracks began to develop on all sides as the wood lost moisture. Rather than renouncing them to the burn pile I ventured to turn a hollow vessel and stabilize each crack with bow tie keys. The keys subsequently grow in size along each split which may convey an image of 12 butterflies. Life persists from what is destined to fall apart and rot.
