Here’s a furniture-shopping tip most people never think about:

Look at the back.

We naturally judge a chair, sofa, desk or cabinet from the front. But today’s homes are much more open, and furniture increasingly sits away from the wall.

That means the back matters.

A beautifully finished desk can float in an office instead of being pushed against a wall. An interesting chair can be appreciated from every direction. A console can help define two areas of an open room rather than simply filling an empty wall.

When a piece looks beautiful from more than one angle, you suddenly have many more possibilities for where—and how—you can use it.

Next time you’re furniture shopping, walk all the way around the piece. You may discover the most interesting view isn’t the front.

Some furniture becomes part of the family without us even realizing it.

Think about the dining table.

It sees Tuesday-night dinners and Thanksgiving. Homework spread across one end. Morning coffee. Birthday cakes. Friends staying far longer than planned. Maybe a few scratches and marks that eventually become part of its story.

What actually makes one piece of furniture higher quality than another?

Price alone doesn’t tell you.

Start with the materials. Solid wood and quality veneers age differently than inexpensive composite materials. Look at how drawers open and close, how joints come together, whether the piece feels substantial, and how carefully the finish has been applied.

Then look closer.

Are the drawers aligned? Does the hardware feel solid? Is the wood grain thoughtfully matched? Does the piece feel stable when you use it?

These details may not be the first things you notice when you fall in love with a piece, but they’re often what determines how you’ll feel about it years from now.

Some tables are made to fill a space. This one is made to fill with people.

Family dinners that turn into long conversations. Sunday breakfast when everyone somehow ends up at the table at the same time. Friends coming over and squeezing in one more chair. Holidays, birthdays, homework, takeout nights… and all the everyday moments in between.

Fair warning: this mirror may cause you to redecorate an entire room. 😏

It starts innocently enough.

You find a mirror you love. Then you realize it needs the right console underneath it. Obviously, the console needs a lamp. And now that you’re looking at the wall… maybe it needs a new color too.

Three hours later, you’re mentally redesigning half the house. 😂

That’s what a great statement piece can do. Sometimes you don’t find the piece that fits the room — you find the piece that gives you a whole new idea for the room.

And honestly, those are usually the most fun finds.

If you love it, don’t assume it’ll be here next week. 👀

We’ve seen it happen more than once.

You find the piece.
You sit in it.
You take a photo.
You send it to someone.
You go home to “think about it.”

And then you come back…

Someone else apparently didn’t need as much thinking time. 😂

That’s the fun — and occasionally the heartbreak — of shopping a warehouse where the inventory is always changing.
