On Thursday night my Father received a call that he was granted a second chance at life. There was a match for lungs.
Friday morning at 7am they started an 8 hour surgery. The transplant was successful and he was moved to ICU where he’s been now for 2 days. He was woken up that night and had his breathing tube removed. He is sitting up in bed and cracking jokes with the nurses and staff already. Today Sunday at 11:20am he was taken off of oxygen. He had been on oxygen for 10 months. A huge sigh of relief for all of us. A giant first step to recovery and coming home fully. His next hurdle is back and walking with out huge oxygen loss. The Fitzgerald family really appreciates everyone reaching out and everyone also helping out with contributions. A very very big thank you. We couldn’t have asked for more support in this crazy time. We are blown away by the Duke University staff and doctors.
We will give more updates as things progress.
