This request is a little bit embarrassing as I neglected to write down the customer who had me recane this sofa for them. Does anyone out there know who this sofa may belong to? It has been refinished since early this year but I haven’t been able to find the owner. Thanks for your help.

I lost the client information for this project so posting it here so hopefully the owner will contact me. Thanks.

This is embarrassing. I refinished a 6 foot long sofa with pressed cane on the back and both ends, but I lost the customer tag I had attached to it. If this is yours, please contact me. Thank you.

A customer asked me to repair a settee for them. As you can see, it was in pretty bad shape. The back had three sections of pressed cane, each section was torn in various places. It looked like it was the original cane back. The seat is rush, but at one time it was a cushioned seat, as I saw from multiple, and I mean multiple, old nail holes all around the top of the seat. In addition, under the front section of the rush, there is a nice carving which at one time would have been exposed.

Out of a 45 inch long seat, I had to replace 14 inches of rush. You can see the before and after pictures. I now need to match the new rush's color with the old rush color. I have tried various stains and also natural shellac and amber shellac. The amber does not quite give it the same amber/orange color as the existing rush, so I am still experimenting.

For the back I had to cane three separate sections; the two side sections and the long back section. You can see from one of the attached pictures that I used all of my caning wedges to hold in one of the sections while I hammered and then trimmed. It was the same for the other side section also. Fortunately, the cane went in nicely and the splines were not too difficult to glue in either. To cane the sides, I turned the settee on its side, so it was sticking up in the air, so I could cane each side flat.

All in all, I think it turned out nicely.

Just finished this chair for a customer in 6MM binder cane. Hard on the fingers but beautiful when finished. I can do one for you too.

Finished all of my commissions and now have time to complete some of my own pieces to sell. Had this ladder back chair which had an old split reed seat. Removed the seat, glued up some rungs, cleaned up the chair, and restained the chair.
Then decided that it would look good with a pale Shaker tape seat in a pattern I designed for this chair. It turned out well and is now available for someone to take home.

Received a small stool finished with rush this week. The customer wanted it redone with split reed as he felt it would be stronger. Fortunately I still had some reed in stock. Was able to strip and clean it and redo the seat and turn it back to him the next day. A nice quick turn-around.

Just finished caning a pair of beautiful chairs for a client, while my lovely wife Kathy of Happy Cat Stained Glass made him a pair of seat covers that he desired, for when his friends came over and used the chairs.

The chairs, as you will shortly see, were originally caned many years ago, then when the cane was no longer usable, someone upholstered both of the chairs in a 1950's material, it seems.

I removed the seat cover, then the sheet that was under that, a flimsy (after all of these years) piece of padding, and then burlap under that. Each of these layers was attached with heavy duty staples, which I do not want to find in another chair again. You can count the staples yourself in the pictures.

After removing the staples, and fine steel wooling the seat to smooth out all of the staple marks, I recaned it with fine cane. For me, all of the staple marks had character to the chair

Kathy created two seat cushions to cover the chairs for when his friends come over. Better to be safe than sorry!

All in all, very nice chairs now that they are finished, and fun and challenging to do. Thanks guys for allowing me the pleasure of doing your chairs.

I bet right now you are thinking and dreaming about how you wish it was summer, and imagining that you are sitting on your front porch, or maybe on your pool deck, or on your back yard, looking out on the Potomac, with that nice, big, cold drink in your hand, just slowly rocking in your beautiful, reconditioned porch rocker. Well, now is the perfect time to get your porch rockers and other old chairs refinished with a new cane, reed, or Shaker tape seat or back.

Just send me a picture for an estimate as to what it would cost to get your rocker or other chair looking like new again. And then start dreaming of summer and warmer days again and of your tall drink being chilled by those cubes of ice and not by the "bomb cyclone"!
