Freshly milled butternut tree (aka white walnut). Increasingly hard to find. This one was standing dead and the sap wood was starting to degrade. Milled to 10/4 (that’s 2.5 inches) 8’ x 2’. Really nice color in this piece with only a small amount of degradation in the heartwood. Miraculously no metal.

Testing out a new dust collection system this week. Constructed earlier in the week, utilizing the blower from my single stage, an olive barrel, an Oneida molded cyclone and a Wynn hepa filter.
Cyclones boast 99% particle separation resulting in longer filter life and fewer cleanings
The assembly was straight forward. The cyclone is well designed and joined tightly with both the blower housing and 6” pvc without need for adapters. The only real inconvenience was the height of the finished product. The shop has low ceilings so the motor rests between the floor joists.

Came across some nice Siberian Elm today. It had some nice tone and subtle figure. I find the crotch wood in elm doesn’t mend well and leaves a lot of bark inclusions. I like the way this one turned out. The crotch mended enough to remain stable but still has some real interest.
10’x28” ripped into 3.25” slabs. no surprises inside, which is rare for a tree next to a road. The nice thing about elm is no one wants to split it for fire wood. If you have tried you know why. I look forward to working with these slabs in a couple years, at least three anyway.

Meanwhile. My kitchen is coming along. I Installed cabinets I made in the basement. Also learned to cut and polish granite (not actually that difficult, just really wet). I cut and installed the counters to the right with remnants from a friend . Aa & y granite did the counter around the sink. Next up the uppers
