Lawn Problems Caused by Excessive Rain

Yep - It's raining! Seems like it hasn't stopped for more than a day or two and then rains for several days straight. Lawns are saturated, everything is muddy and standing water in every low spot around. The excessive and almost non-stop rain has and will continue to be a cause of lawn and landscape issues, below are a few.

Surface damage – Walking and moving objects like trash cans across a saturated lawn will not only compact our clay based soils, but it can leave permanent marks or tracks in your yard.

Drown grass roots – Grass needs oxygen to grow, and excessive water will fill the air gaps in the soil, effectively drowning the plants.

Shallow root growth – Grass roots that don’t have to go far below the surface to find water can’t withstand drier conditions, leading to dead brown patches.

Prone to disease and insects – When your lawn has a shallow root system, the grass becomes stressed, making it more susceptible to damage from insects and disease.

More w**ds – Consistently too much water on your lawn can cause a lot of hard-to-kill w**ds to grow

Loss of nutrients – If your lawn gets too much water, vital nutrients are washed away before they can be absorbed through the root system.

Now there isn't much we can do to stop mother nature and the excess rain...but try to avoid walking on your saturated lawn as much as you can until things dry out. Consider AIR-8 aeration this Spring to help relieve compacted soil.

Mulching Tips
Mulches help to conserve soil moisture by reducing evaporation—thus reducing the need for irrigation and watering. They also modify soil temperatures in our extreme seasons of hot and cold—lowering soil temperatures in summer, favoring root growth and insulating soils in winter, protecting roots from cold damage. A good layer of mulch is also very effective in preventing w**d growth, limiting the germination of w**d seeds and inhibiting their growth. When organic mulches decompose, they provide nutrients and add humus to our soils, both improving soil texture and promoting more vigorous plant growth. Mulch also helps to protect tender root systems, cushioning the effects of heavy rains and foot or vehicular traffic, which can cause excessive compaction of both soils and roots. In addition, mulching rings around trees and mulched planting beds naturally prevent physical injuries to landscape plants caused by lawnmowers and mechanical trimmers—injuries which often contribute to the early decline or death of even established plantings.

How To Mulch
Most mulches should be applied to a depth of two to three inches and maintained at a depth of less than four inches. Annual top dressings may be necessary to maintain that "freshly-finished” look, however, keep in mind that the less you add to an established area the better. When mulching around the base of plants, do not mulch up against the trunks of trees or shrubs. Start mulching just beyond the trunk and gradually taper up to the two to three inches as you get away from the plants. This will prevent excess moisture around the base of the plants which can lead to suffocation and rotting of the roots. Avoid freshly ground sawdust, tree-chippings and any other organic matter that has not been aged or composted. In the process of decomposition these materials will take oxygen and nutrients from the soil and can literally starve nearby plants to death.

When to Apply
Mulch can be applied at any time of the year, but the most effective times are early spring (before the leaves open) and in the late fall after we have had several frosts.

It’s that time of year again. Your dormant bermuda or zoysia turf is overrun with green patches of annual bluegrass, or as it is called by its scientific name, poa annua.

Annual bluegrass is a winter annual grassy w**d that first germinates in the fall. It will continue germinating during warmer periods of the winter and will grow to several inches tall by the spring. It then will begin producing large amounts of seeds before dying off in warmer weather. The seeds, of course, germinate again the following fall and the cycle starts again with a more significant infestation. Cutting the grass close does not help because poa annua will form seed heads very quickly after mowing. It also seems to grow more prolifically in wetter areas of your lawn.

Fortunately, there are multiple herbicide control strategies that are usually successful. First, an effective pre-emergent applied in early fall can help control most of the problem before it even starts. Pre-emergent herbicides kill new seedlings as soon as they germinate.

For the smaller percentage of seedlings that survive the pre-emergent barrier, there are effective post-emergent herbicides. Also, it often can take 2-3 applications for complete control, so be patient with our efforts in controlling this w**d from your dormant bermuda and zoysia turf.

It is important to note that because annual bluegrass is a grassy w**d, the standard broadleaf w**d killing herbicides that kill other w**ds such as henbit, clover, chickw**d, dandelions, etc., are useless against annual bluegrass. It requires special products that target grassy w**ds. Many other companies do not include post-emergent grassy w**d or annual bluegrass control with their program and up-charge you for it. We do include it with our program because it is such a nuisance and we want our customers’ lawns looking as good as possible as a reflection of our work.

So don’t let poa annua trouble you too much. Be patient and let the herbicides work and your dormant bermuda or zoysia turf will be w**d-free again soon!
