Just met with a new Cary customer about all the molding, doors, along with other things throughout the whole house.

They are looking at doing all the base, shoe, doors and casing throughout the entire house. This will be starting on the first floor and then going to the second floor. They also want to do a built-in around the fireplace with bookcases on both sides and then eventually the staircase as well.

They just had brand new windows installed in raw pine. They were tossing back-and-forth between priming and painting versus staining and finishing. I told them it would be more economical to have the windows primed and painted than it would be for me to stain and finish them, considering there are already installed. The moldings around the windows and doors, i.e.. casing will all be replaced with me spraying paint on it in my spray booth and then installing it. The same goes for the base, shoe molding and pre-hung doors.

In addition to this, they are interested in applied wall molding like I did for the Cary beam ceiling job and possibly a beam ceiling in the grand foyer 17 feet up in the air. The beam ceiling job will be another phase.

In addition to all the typical molding work, they want to look at doing crown molding as well.

Going back later today to take measurements of all the trim and doors. This is their forever home, so it makes sense to invest in a high-quality individual, to do things right the first time.

If you desire high-quality, excellent customer service and receiving exactly what you want, I am definitely the individual you want to have a conversation with. Feel free to reach out to me at 847-366-8191 to start the process.

She said she did her research, hence why I’m the person she called for this project. She also did her research on painters and just happened to be the same Painting company I use, so it will be a great match.

The Oakwood Hills Project is now 100% complete.

This project involved the following:

Shop painting in my professional spray booth for everything, which includes the railings/newel posts and cap pieces for the staircase and the doors/trim.

I replaced seven bedroom/bathroom pre-hung doors. All new door casings, base moldings and shoe moldings throughout the entire first floor. The doors are a one piece MDF, which means there are no expansion and contraction joints and therefore they will never crack and will always stay looking beautiful. The paint work is slick as glass . No brush and or roller marks.

The staircase was an interesting one, because the lower staircase going up to the landing had spindles, but they were not attached into the floor/steps and we’re just hanging there.

I custom-made the newel posts and railings from scratch. The wrought iron spindles were a store purchase.

When it comes to staircases, there’s always a chance there could be some hidden issues behind things that I’m not able to see until I actually get into the job. Fortunately, with this particular staircase, everything went as planned.

I also provided the customer with CAD drawings to show them what the staircase will look like before I cut one piece and started taking things apart. This way, there is complete transparency and they can see exactly what they are going to receive for their investment. I don’t think even stair companies provide people with drawings, especially for redo’s like this.

I know this customer had a very difficult time finding a contractor to do both the doors/trim and especially the staircase. They hired me solely off of reputation in Cary. They said people were giving estimates off of pictures and we’re not even getting back to them, let alone not coming out to look at the job. With the estimates they did receive, they felt as though it was inaccurate and would not be receiving what it is that I ended up doing for them.

Staircases are not easy at all. They require precise measuring and accuracy to do things the right way and to code. This job follows the international residential building code for the railing heights, spindle spacings, etc. This way, when the customer goes to sell the house, they won’t have to worry about anything. This is just one of the benefits of hiring/investing in a true professional to do things.

If you desire high-quality, excellent customer service and things being done right the first time, please give me a call at 847-366-8191.

Just left the house in Huntley to look at refinishing this kitchen table with two leaves. I asked what type of furniture polishes they use and they said Pledge, Old English and a few others. I had them put in the leaves when I was there, because I wanted to see the original color and the difference of what it looks like versus the main table they have used. There was not only a drastic color difference, because the finish bleached out from the sunlight, but the shine level was also different as well, as the products they used caused the main part of the table to be much shinier than the original.

Another concern is the wear on the chairs themselves and that is from the oil in people skin. There are also areas on the table itself that have wear because of the oil as well, but did not easily show up in the pictures.

They are looking for a long-term solution and to have a very high likelihood they would never need to refinish it again and therefore I recommended they go with my urethane.

The table was made by the Amish 20 years ago and has held up decently well. I did a refinishing job on a walnut table done by the Amish about two years ago for a similar type of situation of the finish wearing away. There’s a big misconception when it comes to Amish furniture, as the majority of them are using electricity, machinery, sprayers, computers, etc. and they are as new aged as I am, except I don’t use computers. Even if someone bought something Amish me today, they would not offer the quality of finishes I do. They, along with major manufacturers are all about volume versus quality.

As I also explained to them and I do to everyone looking to have something refinished, if this is a price comparison from buying something new versus what I can offer, I’m likely not going to be reasonable, but if they want a solution that is a long-term one and the problem free, that is what I have to offer.

Hello everyone! I’m a professional woodworker, who does custom cabinetry and furniture from scratch, along with touchup and repairs, refinishing, restoration of antiques and more. If it is woodworking-related, the answer is yes, as everything I do comes down to expectations.

List of current and upcoming jobs:

Oakwood Hills- all first floor interior doors and door casings have been installed. Next up is all the base and shoe moldings throughout the entire first floor.

Same Oakwood Hills home- after that, installing the new MCM STYLE staircase with custom made railings (by me), new newel posts and square wrought iron spindles.

After this and intertwined with Oakwood Hills, I’ll be starting the finishing work on the box beam/coffered ceiling for a Cary customer.

When I’m not at Oakwood hills in the evening, I’ll be at the shop doing finishing work for the ceiling project and while the pieces are drying, I’ll be starting to do a repair on a bench seat (broken spindle) and then a strip and refinish on them, so the seats can go to my upholstery guy to be reupholstered. (2 benches)

If you are thinking about reaching out to me in the near future for a project and you too desire high quality, excellent customer service and beautiful ending results, please give me a call soon at 847-366-8191, as my lead-time is growing.

Just went to go look at this job in Fox Lake. A complete strip and refinish job on this desk. It appears to be all walnut burl, except for the back looks to be walnut.

Today was a day for estimates. If you are looking to have something done woodworking related, please reach out to me through messenger or on my cell phone at 847-366-8191.

The first estimate was because the customer has finish deterioration going on behind the handle of the cabinet doors. This happens because of the oil in peoples skin and fingernails. I wanted to see how bad it is to see if it’s something I can cosmetically fix or not, but unfortunately, the finish is literally peeling away and if I try to do just that area, it’s going to stand out like a sore of thumb. Also, using aerosols will not give me the finish thickness I need to match the rest of the door. Another challenging part about that job is, the cabinets are natural cherry and cherry darkens with age, so if I go to fix the areas behind the handles, I will need to sand it down to the raw and then that one spot will be lighter than the rest of the door. I can chemically alter it, but it won’t change color at the same rate as the rest of the door and therefore would end up sticking out like a sore thumb at some point. Unfortunately, to do things the right way, I would have to strip and refinish all of his kitchen cabinet doors and drawer fronts. Also, the reason for redoing everything is because the shine level of a pre-catalyzed lacquer in a dull/matte sheen is shinier than what he has now, so the only way to get a lower level Sheen is to use urethane and then it becomes more expensive. Another negative to doing just the area is, I don’t know how long that would even last him before it would end up looking the same way it does now and then he would have spent his money for me to do a Temporary Band-Aid for it to come back again and then he has to invest the money to strip them all and redo it at that time.

The next customer was looking for a custom walnut vanity to be made. They are also looking to have the MCM dining room table refinished.

The last estimate of the day was doing a kitchen modification and changing it from a hood to a microwave above the range and also where the built-in microwave is at now, making that a regular cabinet. Both of these areas are not straightforward and could involve uninstalling some of the cabinetry to reinstall it level and plumb. In addition to all of that, the crown molding has to be redone as well.

As I explain to everyone at estimates, I don’t do just OK work. Things we need to be done the right way. 😁
