In 1950, Herman Miller introduced an innovative new chair with a unique shape: a shell. Designed by Charles and Ray Eames—after years of exploring the right materials to support the human form—the chair was the first to be made with fiberglass (or indeed any plastic) technology. A hydraulic press injection-molded the glass-fiber-reinforced polyester resin into its now ubiquitous form.

After consulting with several Mies van der Rohe scholars, Knoll confirmed tha the architect had no rule about limiting the Barcelona Chair to leather. In fact, Mies and his frequent collaborator, Lilly Reich, often used textiles to harmonize furniture and interiors in new ways.

The Barcelona Chair previously available only in leather or suede is now available in fabric.
