The lid has 2 long pockets sewn down the middle to create 4 pockets. Again I used the original piece as a pattern. I did not line these pockets like I did for the side pockets to reduce bulkiness. I fit the base piece first fusing it to Pellon 70 then placed the pockets and stitched through all layers. I also created the hinge cover piece.

I started with the side pockets. Using the existing pieces for sizing I created 2 lined pocket pieces. Originally one side had a snap-in pocket. However, I am making both sides the same with sewn-on pockets. The backing piece is stabilized with Pellon 70 fused onto the fabric with Steam-A-Seam. The blue tape is just painter’s tape marking the width of the pocket. I followed the same basic construction style as the original pockets and sewed them right through the base piece already adhered to the Pellon. Set those aside. I will not glue anything until I have all the pieces made and dry fit to the suitcase.

I chose my fabrics! This is Beauty and the Beast inspired fabric from Riley Blake. This fabric line also comes with a cute panel. The plan is to make a quilt to match. Always have to have some projects on deck!

I’m treating this rehab like an upholstery project. Label your pieces with a marker before taking it apart. This way you can refer back to them when you are making the new pieces. Take lots of pictures to keep track of the smallest details. As you see some lightweight cardboard is still adhered to the interior. I lightly misted with water and was able to peel most of it off. The goal is to have the cleanest surface possible.

Since I haven’t posted anything in over 1000 days ( 😬) I thought I would share this fun project. This is a vintage suitcase I’m using to store baby dolls for the granddaughters when they come over. It’s a little musty smelling so I’m giving it a makeover. Here’s where I started!
