The silence of the shop is where the real work happens.

Some might call it "quiet time," but in this trade, silence is usually a sign of deep focus. When you’re responsible for building a family’s Final Tribute, there’s no room for noise or distractions.
Our family has been at this for five generations. If there’s one thing that history has taught us, it’s that quality isn’t rushed, and true skill doesn’t need to shout to be felt. We aren't interested in the "fast" way or the "easy" way; we are interested in the right way.
We’ve been keeping our heads down and our eyes on the grain. The work we do carries a weight that we take with the utmost seriousness, and that often requires a level of dedication that doesn't always make it to a social media feed.

Because we spend our lives in this trade, we often think about the person who had to build that cross.

The historical reality is that it wasn’t built with care or precision. It was a crude, heavy, utilitarian tool designed by an empire for brutal efficiency.

But the most important thing ever built from wood wasn’t designed to hold a body forever. It was built to create a way through.

127 years ago, a coffin fell from a cliff in Poland. It sounds like the start of a legend, but it’s a cold, hard fact of archaeology. This hollowed-out oak trunk, preserved for nearly 1,800 years, crashed down to the Baltic coast in 1899. Scientists have spent decades arguing over the dates, but for us at Randolph’s, the real story is in the wood.

Most people see a museum piece. We see a standard of construction that hasn't changed.

When you build the last physical resting place a person will ever need, you aren’t just "making a product." You are working with a material that is meant to endure. This woman wasn’t a princess or a member of the elite, as they once thought, she was likely a commoner. Yet, she was laid to rest in a vessel that protected her for almost two millennia.

In this craft, we deal with the weight of finality every day. We build the last physical resting place a person will ever need, and we take that responsibility with the utmost seriousness. There is no room for shortcuts when you are honoring a legacy.

Lately, that weight has been literal. Between the total loss of our shop to Hurricane Helene and the recent collapse of our temporary storage under the ice of Winter Storm Fren, our recovery is being tested. We are currently working to salvage the specialized lumber and tools that are the lifeblood of our studio.

But five generations of skill and decades at the bench don't just fold because a roof did. We are digging out. We are stabilizing. We are still here. "Beyond the Extraordinary" isn’t just a tagline we put on a website; it’s a promise we intend to keep to the families who trust us.

We want to share something real with you today.

Our friend Larry, a man who drove three trips up the mountain to bring supplies when we were digging out from Helene, sent an email to his own contact list this week. He didn't have to. He just believes in what we do.

When Hurricane Helene hit, the loss wasn't just machinery and a building. It was history.
