This Tansu chest came into our shop after a long shipment from San Francisco during the Covid year of 2020. It lived for decades in a smoker's house and was covered in mold/mildew after years of storage. But the good news is that none of that is fatal and we were able to clean and restore the rare Brazilian rosewood exterior to a beautiful condition! Made by precision master craftsmen in Japan about 160 years ago this is a rare example of masterwork in both design and ex*****on!

Project starting today: walnut commode, ca. 1875. All original parts intact but at 135 years old the old hide glue in the joints has disintegrated. We'll carefully disassemble and reglue it with animal hide glue like it was done originally.
The lucky owner inherited this through her family and it will be very meaningful to have it restored and once again set the original marble top in place.

Here are the final pictures of the Civil War era table that our client remembers as a hog butchering table when she was a little girl. Now her daughter uses it as a farmhouse style dining table that they inaugurated on Thanksgiving day in 2017! A true example of turning a sow's ear into a silk purse! A very rewarding project.

The specific technique to flatten the warped board is to cut a series of saw kerfs into the reverse side, clamp it flat, fill the grooves with hardened filler, dry overnight and then sand smooth. Look at the picture with the metal ruler to see how flat the board now is! This is a labor intensive process but was the only way to save the original board and preserve the wealth of history and patina it possessed.

This is a post Civil War work table that was used on a farm for generations for hog butchering. The top was separated, split down the middle and severely warped and twisted on one half. Now the family wanted to restore and use it as a dining table but look how warped it is against that metal ruler! What to do to flatten out so plates and glasses won't rock, tip and fall over!?

Project finished and installed at Westerly! This is the original Clowes home which was bequeathed in perpetuity as the official residence of the Indianapolis Museum of Art sitting Director. These 2 new table leaves can now sit 14 instead of 10 which expands the number of guests which can now have dinner and enjoy the beautiful artistic accoutrements of this classic home. This was a challenging but rewarding project!

We are building the most unusually large table leaves in existence I'd say.....48" wide x 51" deep. These solid Honduras mahogany leaves will go into the 18th C. dining table in the official residence of the CEO of the Indianapolis Museum of Art. This was a very time consuming engineering process as table leaves are seldom wider than 24". Now they can seat 14 instead of 10 at the Westerly house dinner parties!
