Hunting ME

Hunting ME An outdoor lifestyle company spearheaded by John Altman: a hunter, conservationist and educator. Hunting Maine just flat out isn't easy, but it's our passion.

Hunting:
To engage in the pursuit of an endeavor with linear focus. As humans we all engage in hunting in one form or another in order to feed our desires. For us this craft is exercised in the pursuit of extraordinary experiences in the outdoors Maine provides us with endless challenges of that very pursuit, from its deep timber to its unpredictable coast line.

We wanted to give a HUGE thank you to the and teams for putting on an epic premiere of our next film “Common Ground”. It has been an absolute pleasure enjoying your beautiful state with some amazing folks as well as working alongside everyone for the film’s production and premiere. We’ll be back this away again soon, you can count on that.

We’re excited for the film to hit YouTube next week, we’ll be sure to let you know when it lands on Stone Galcier’s page!

Another big shoutout to the sponsors of the evening:

Ankle boots, black powder and a good shot!

The importance of learning from doing is essential for our children. I feel incredibly fortunate to be able to plant seeds, cut trail and watch as Rye continues to grow as an outdoorsman. Our souls are built from the shared experiences, to go without them would be to starve.

Rye set out to shoot his first doe with an old TC Renegade muzzleloader I built 30 years ago. As I watched the process I learned more about him, he found many reasons not to go, I could see he wanted more self assurance. Towards the end of the end of the muzzleloader season his will to hunt was stronger than his desire to shoot the old musket. Seeking more confidence he asked if he could use the modern day muzzleloader, and with that he did well!

With 6 inches of snow on the ground and a cold breeze, I told him to put on his winter Muck boots and watched as he left the house with his ankle boots. Learning from doing can be a bitch!

For years on Thanksgiving I have woke pre-dawn to put the turkey in the oven, this year was different. John and I slid out the door with time on our side to walk to a tree-stand deep in the woods. Now you need to know I struggle with heights. My John, being who he is made sure we had done a dry run in hopes to calm my nerves - Thanks honey. The morning was calm and cold as the sun came up, we broke the silence with a few rattling sessions. Soon after, we were watching a beautiful buck silently glide across the mossy forest floor towards my tree. I will never forget John saying “Emma shoot that buck!” My shot was on! My sweetie also gave me this beautiful new knife that he carried all season — just hoping for the right chance to give it to me. I dressed my buck in style!

Oh ya, we had cinnamon roles and the turkey in the oven by 8:00, and I had faced one of my fears and had an incredible story to tell.

The rut for me is a double edge sword for sure. As an observer of Whitetail patterns and movement at heart, the rut flips the deck. Often fast random runners crazed with no particular path to follow and the absence of caution. Vulnerabilities are high for both hunter and pray.

We exploit their weakness, and at the same time become susceptible to making split-second decisions, sometimes risky that often become the deciding factor of a successful outcome.

I believe the rut will always be a love hate relationship for me, I almost feel I am cheating when I kill a mature Whitetail wile rutting. I shot this beautiful buck as the sun was rising in the swale grasses, he was working a group of does, full rut.

I’m curious about your thoughts on the rut, and how you feel about the double edge sword?

Past a few nice bucks before I got a look at this one. My name is Rye and I am 12 years old now. I made my mind up that this year I was going to do my best to shoot a mature buck.

The area I was hunting with my dad was super deep, so we would ride our mountain bikes in and out in the dark with headlamps, way cool! I was sitting on a big swale swamp watching the sun come up and it all got crazy. Pulled off a 185 yard shot with a good rest. I had four bucks chasing two different does all over the place. When dad got him in the binos and said it’s him [bang], we got really excited and we both started shaking like mad. Dad said I hit him hard but I was worried.

My mom hiked in to help us bring him out and that took us all day. Super cool thing, I was using a new gun that dad ended up giving me, a R***r compact 308 model 77 Hawkeye.

Still haven’t named him yet any ideas? Guess his weight in our story. He is 5 years old good luck.

Deer stories like this don’t come around often. I was fortunate to play a roll in this one but it wasn’t mine alone.

Four years ago Josh had an encounter at 5 yards with a buck we nicknamed [Wide 8] It ended with no shot but much heartache. At 5.5 years old we had time and space to set the chess board and begin playing the game. Josh took on this deer with more intentions than all of us. The time he spent brainstorming and planning for his next encounter was tenfold over the rest.

This summer we scouted and felt confident we were keying in on his core. The camera data started rolling in and it supported our theories, we patiently waited for the right moment.

On a pitch black late October morning the moment had come, Josh took priority with the most history and effort studying this buck. He headed into where he felt was the best stand to run into him. I took a stab at a new tree we found over a mile away that had good scrape action for some other prospects. The morning was slow, no deer until about 7:45am when I caught movement. A bit unprepared and from an angle unanticipated I got caught flat footed. He gave me a glimpse of bone and I instantly knew who it was. I stood up grabbed my bow and came to full draw. This time he was 7 yards and it was me not Josh.

Of course I called him first, I had to break the news that I just shot the deer he’d been focused on for over 4 years. He of course met me with open arms as I would do the same. The blood trail was as short and easy to follow as expected. The 8.5 year old [Wide 8] lay there at the end in all his glory. The rest is history.

I hope Josh shoots my dream buck one day so we can call it square. I’m sure it’ll happen and look forward to that call!
