Yesterday I had sort of a life changing moment I never saw coming. It really made me realize how much we take for granted.
I have a friend at work who has been battling cancer for 9 years. And he has the most upbeat, fighting spirit in the world. I’m around someone with cancer every single day and because of his attitude you almost forget how real the fight is.
Yesterday at work during lunch I received a package in the mail.
I’m a woodworker and we are currently working on a job where I ordered turned walnut table legs from a company called Honestly it was based on simple things. They were a good price, they came in walnut, and it was a 10 day turnaround.
I opened the box and I have never received a package like this before.
Inside was a devotional called “The Ride of Your Life: Steps to Jesus.” That alone stopped me in my tracks.
About five minutes later while still on lunch I opened Instagram to message a company about a conference table build. The very first thing that popped up was a post from It was a photo of his daughter sitting in his barber chair.
Back in 2019 when I was still really fresh into building, tables here and there but nothing like what I was about to step into, I got a message from Joe. He liked my work and wanted to meet at his shop in Old Town Bluffton.
Truth is I was in over my head. But only I knew that.
Joe gave me a chance anyway. He trusted me. He let me be creative. I outfitted his first location with my woodwork and he was proud of the space he had envisioned. I was lucky enough to be a part of it.
I didn’t know Joe deeply on a personal level but he carried himself with pride, humility, and a genuine spirit. I also never knew he was battling cancer.
Yesterday just hit me with a lot of emotion.
I lost my dad to cancer in 2013. I have a friend who battles it every day. Someone who gave me my first real opportunity lost their battle. And right in the middle of all of that I received the word of God in a box I wasn’t expecting.
If that doesn’t tell you God is real and He is working then I don’t know what will.
Thank you to . Thank you to .classic.cuts. Meeting you was a privelege.
