I know there has been a lot of frustration and questions about why Pirate Plunge Pool is not open yet. As the pool manager, I want to address some of those concerns personally.
First, I understand the disappointment. I am disappointed too. No one wants those gates open more than I do.
I have seen comments placing blame on "management," and that's okay—I have broad shoulders and can handle the criticism. However, I think it's important for our community to understand that opening a public pool is much more involved than simply unlocking the gate.
What many people may not realize is that the Bristow Pool has been a part of my life since 1998. I grew up at this pool, worked here as a lifeguard, and have spent many summers serving our community here. This facility means a great deal to me, and I take great pride in doing everything possible to make sure it operates safely and successfully.
Every facility is different, and Pirate Plunge Pool cannot be compared to other pools. There are many moving parts that must come together before we can safely open. Some of those things are within my control, and many are not.
I am a school teacher during the school year, and while my official employment at the pool begins later, I spend countless hours before that preparing, planning, recruiting staff, coordinating training, and working behind the scenes to get everything ready. The work doesn't begin when school ends—it starts months before.
One of our biggest challenges is staffing. Lifeguards must be properly certified before they can work. Not only are fewer young people pursuing lifeguard certification, but there is also a shortage of available certification classes in our area. We begin recruiting early and encourage interested individuals to get certified, but ultimately we cannot force people to attend classes or complete the certification process. Without enough certified lifeguards, we cannot safely open.
In addition, we have been working through issues related to recent construction and improvement projects at the facility. The timing of contractor schedules and project completion is outside of my control, but those projects must be completed before we can move forward.
Please know that this job is not glamorous. It requires long hours, problem-solving, difficult decisions, and a tremendous amount of dedication because I genuinely care about this community and providing a safe place for families to make memories together.
At the end of the day, my goal has always been to provide Bristow with a place where families can spend time together, make memories, and enjoy their summer. My hope is that once we do open, families will come out and truly enjoy everything Pirate Plunge Pool has to offer. This facility has always been more than just a swimming pool—it's a place where friendships are built, laughter is shared, and memories are made for generations.
I sincerely hope that those who are eager for us to open will come out often, support the facility, and enjoy everything it has to offer. Pirate Plunge Pool is one of Bristow's greatest community assets, and I look forward to seeing it filled with families making memories together all summer long.
I appreciate those who have shown patience, understanding, and support. We are working diligently every day to get Pirate Plunge Pool open as soon as possible. When we do open, it will be because we know the facility is safe, staffed, and ready for everyone to enjoy.
Thank you for your patience, your support, and your understanding.
