Another (paying) project done! This was a first for me...

MEGA SHOE-BOX!

My neighbor always sees me working in the garage, so one day Victor came over and asked if I would make this box (didn’t even know this was a thing) for his daughter for Christmas. He showed me some pictures and there weren’t many examples online but I had enough to go off of to get me started. It’s all HQ plywood, some use MDF but that woulda been way too heavy. And this thing is already a two man job to move (which made this that much harder to build solo).

The idea is for it to mimic what a regular shoebox looks like... flip up top, side panels on the lid, etc. and of course we added the sliding drawer for more storage. Everything online and it’s directions call for it to just be painted then apply whatever decals you want. Well, knowing me, that’s not how I roll. Gotta add customization and make it as difficult as possible to build. So first idea was just wood burning the lid with what you see. Then I suggested something to really make it stand out from anyone else. And victor loved the idea of carving out his daughters name instead. I did something like this already, when I made a wedding cake stand for my brother in law...

Additional stuff I used was: 26” drawer slides, hydro hinges to hold up the heavy lid, piano hinge, motion sensor lighting, and some foot pads for easy re-location. I stained it with something called maple 203 or whatever.

Finished it off with several coats of oil based poly to give it a fantastic shine and touch. Photos don’t really do it justice. OVERALL DIMENSIONS: 42”w X 29”d X 19”h with the lid closed. Weight: heavier than my wife.
Storage: min 16 pairs to 20 pairs but could hold over 30 pairs depending on layout.

And the customization is endless if anyone has some different ideas that they might want done.

My latest project- I made a cigar humidor for my pals and for their wedding! I was really excited to do this one. I wanna make one for myself and I’m happy the first one could be for my friends!

So I made it out of oak on the outside with an exotic African wood called Wenge for the borders/rails/corners which I’ve seen done before and thought it looked really sharp. I woodburned what you see on the lid to acknowledge the celebration plus the logo on the front Bc my man is a huge fan. (Also the color theme isn’t to far off so it looks appropriate.) Oh and I didn’t stain it. Oak is naturally beautiful. I finished with shellac.

Inside (which still needs to be installed due to a late delivery) features Spanish red cedar as the liner. Any cigar aficionado will tell you SRC is a must for the inside of a humidor in order to keep the right humidity/temp keeping the stogies fresh. Maybe mahogany works I hear but just isn’t worth it. And a filter to produce the right levels for the environment. They lining will extend beyond the oak walls and that will ensure an air tight seal and a soft close.

All n all I was pretty happy with it. Can’t wait to make my next one. And I hope Mr. & Mrs. Hart are enjoying it. I am truly thankful and blessed to have such great friends who entrust me with such important tasks and/or projects for one of the most amazing celebrations/events they will have in their lives. It’s clear how their wedding was so critically dependent on the production and success of my cigar humidor haha jk. Thanks again guys!!!
