Kicking things out in the new shop! Pretty straight ahead cushion job this time. This one made special by the fact that my customer’s father built this chair and to his own specs. Basically he was tall and if you’re not this wouldn’t be the chair for you. The construction was noticeably beautiful from the start. In furniture upholstery you must be no less than perfect on a few key techniques. Cushions are the main show usually. My dad could sew a perfect, straight lined, crisp cornered, flat topped yet plump cushion that was so aesthetically pleasing I could stare at it for hours like a god damn Monet in an art gallery! I myself have been professionally sewing since my late teens and it wasn’t until my late thirties that I finally churned one out and thought heck, that’s starting to look like one of Dad’s! Countless curse words and frustrated moments accompanied that journey but once I arrived I was very proud and it became one of my favorite facets of the trade. Sometimes I watch my own hands while working and ask them where and when they learned how to do that.

First job completed in the new shop! It’s been a trying year since my dad passed in May. At first I was led to believe I could keep things rolling the way they’ve been for many years in a business sense, but ultimately possession of Dad’s house was solely left to my mother. It’s fair to say we haven’t seen eye to eye for many years and at the risk of sounding too personal I’ll just say she made what I consider to be the heartless decision to evict me. I was given 60 days to move 25 years of my rooted life out of my family home and the shop where I learned and accomplished many projects alongside my dad; going back to even before I moved out on my own. Well, I’ve moved out again and it has turned out to be quite the blessing in the end. I bought a sweet 1981 Ford Econoline with a four on the floor and found this wonderful “hobbit hole” of a shop tucked in a neat part of town complete with a loft! I will also be able to move the clock shop out of my kitchen😂 I’d like to also take a minute to say this wouldn’t have ever been possible without the true friends that have become my family, especially my bestie Bill Mousseau. I’ll never forget this Bill and I couldn’t have done it without you! Doors dont close without windows opening they say and to be honest, now that the hard part is over, I am truly happy and excited for the future. Onward and upward friends! Thanks as always for your continued support and please stay tuned for this new adventure!

Some huge(yet relatively small) things happening for Marshall’s Upholstery and Kitsap Antique Clock Repair!! A new shop in an old Bremerton building that couldn’t be more fitting. Honestly, this place was someone’s old hobbit hole and the fit couldn’t be more perfect. It’s been a perfect end to a crazy year and I look forward to sharing this new chapter with any and all! Thanks again for your continued support friends!!

I'm not one to be political online and I certainly don't intend to argue with anyone but here's proof that tariffs are creeping into my little world. There is very little meat left on the bone for markups when it comes to already expensive leather goods and I will have no choice but to pass these costs onto my customers. Please tell me where I can buy fine Italian leather with centuries of tradition here in the states at a reasonable price.

I hit the ground running this July. Lots of projects and summer deadlines. Finished up this 1950's era platform rocker the other day. These old pillow-topped platform pendulums are my favorite to upholster and admire. They scream traditional vintage. This one was no exception. I rebuilt the spring unit in the seat and stuffed the back with 8 layers of traditional cotton. My customer chose a wonderful to***co naugahyde and it paired perfectly with the French natural decorative nails. It's so comfortable I wanted to keep it! It will be a gift for her brother so I hope it continues to be a "chair"ished family heirloom for years to come. Thanks for your continued support.

Just an update on my last post. I did accomplish the pool case! Genuine leather with mohair liner and all antiqued brass hardware. Leather work is not my specialty but it's only a stone's throw from upholstery with a few of the right tools. I'm pretty proud of this one, particularly the curved zipper. I thought this would be a fun project but it was also born out of necessity. I play a considerable amount of pool and my favorite cue happens to be 60". That's a bit long and the darn thing wouldn't fit any other case I had. Thanks for looking!

Somebody(me😂) wants a custom pool cue bag. I'm going all Indiana travel bag on this one😉

Little before and after on some 70's jaguar XJ3 seats. All new foam for the bases and a bit of "reviving" on the rubberized horse hair backs. Vintage import seats are a different breed! IYKYK. I thought the white leather was high class! My customer is putting them in a custom 1956 jag xl120 he's building. Hopefully we see you out this summer Dean! Thanks for looking!

Top stitch Tuesday! Super sweet vintage Henderson wingback going in Seabrook marigold with some rad decorative nails I've been dying to use. Forgot to take a picture of those but they look kinda like black eyed peas. Love the vinyl buttons too! I'll definitely be updating this project as we move forward.

While my last post dealt with the tribulations of self employment in the upholstery field I thought it necessary to share this recent project. Throughout the struggles of that leather sectional I was also upholstering this MCM contour chair; challenging and pushing myself artistically and it turned out to be a therapeutic endeavor.
I first acquired this chair some 25 years ago doing a dump run for a retiring upholsterer and friend. The chair was in very rough shape but struck me. As an ambitious 19 year old I immediately tore it down only to become stifled with fabric selection and there it sat, year after year, in the shed awaiting its turn.
I was gifted this marvelous fabric from a client and at my brother's suggestion it was indeed the needed spark. I try every year, usually around Christmas, to upholster a personal project both to revive the passion and explore the potential and here we've accomplished both.
I knew the welt was to be the star of the show and to achieve that required techniques I'd never used before. Color choice was plethoric but I ended up on carnation pink to both draw from the flowers and soften the black background. All panels required welt attached to them but left long so that once installed they could continue to be stapled to the chair(photo6)
This chair demanded the most out of every aspect of upholstery I know! From pattern matching to paneling, foundation to wood finish. Nothing was routine. I broke rules and melded auto and furniture techniques to obtain the most perfect result I could. I believe that in art perfection is impossible but must be strived for and this project has shown me...that it is never ending.

They can't all be winners!
I took on this large, overstuffed sectional job in October and it went all kinds of sideways! Close to 100 hours of what I call black belt level upholstery. All the pillow top cushions were sewn together, outside backs included, into one mammoth piece then stuffed before being pulled onto the frame! Meticulous and tricky sewing was at the forefront as well as frame attention and all new foam. Not to mention the physical demand. All those hours just to come up with a wrinkly mess! There's really nothing I could do, it's the style of the couch and I didn't engineer the upholstery design. When I bid a large job I try and balance the price being too scary with the clear understanding that it may come with overages. There's no telling what lies beneath most upholstery. Most customers understand this but some don't. I could tell my customer wasn't happy with the bill and looked for issues that could be pushed. One was that the center concave seat didn't line up with the straight seat. I took it back to the shop, tore the cover off and added foam at no charge. After final delivery I looked back at photos to find that it was designed to be recessed!! I hunt perfection in this trade and it hurts my heart when the mark is missed. I believe myself to possess certain talents and standards as a craftsman and this was pure cognitive dissonance. This one even had me thinking it may be time to hang it up😂😂 On to the next I guess. Makes one grateful for those that understand and appreciate the art of upholstery and a lesson learned that sometimes you gotta be smart and turn down the jobs that won't ever showcase it.
