We all know living in Minnesota, winter is coming and there are a few things that can be done for your well and water lines that will help you enjoy it just a little bit more.
1. If you have heat tape on your water line, now is the time to make sure it is working properly and that it is insulated well and the Minnesota cold air is not going to get to it. Lets face it no one wants to do that chore in -20 below temps.
2. Make sure your well is clearly mark with reflectors or some kind of barrier that will stick out above the snow. You don't want to be clearing snow and get that hard hit, or enjoying a snowmobile ride and feel that bump. Running into your well unintentionally can be a costly mistake.
3. If you have a pump house, make sure that it is well insulated and has plenty of heat at ground level. You don't want to cause a fire, but you also do not want cold air getting into your pump house from the ground or through the walls. We want those pressure tanks and water lines nice and cozy to make sure you keep your water this winter.
4. Try to avoid walking or driving on your water lines, this will drive the frost down and later in the season could cause your water lines to freeze.
5. Try to avoid removing snow that is covering your water lines. Even a small amount of snow that is undisturbed is helping insulate the ground and can help keep your water lines from freezing.
6. If you do want to take an extra step to avoid frozen water lines, laying down some straw over your water lines will help insulate the ground and can help avoid freeze up.
We all want to stay nice and warm this winter, even your friendly water lines.
