Not complicated, but custom. Several years ago we refinished the client's antique steam-bent furniture for outdoor (albeit covered) use. They discovered the original table could only accommodate six people. We built this solid red oak top, finished in aniline dye and Osmo exterior oil to sit atop the original top. Now eight people can enjoy lovely spring and summer evenings. Nice clients!

On the workbench, three pieces for refinishing. The first set of photos show the bare wood after we removed the dated, worn finish. Subquent photos show the application of a high-end wiping stain. We've begun to seal the stain with polyurethane in a satin sheen.

Photographer Nathan Webb provided these images of the completed library project that Jeff Welpott of Buildwell Carpentry, and I, finished last month. The clients used antique, solid walnut trim repurposed from a library in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for part of the build. The clients designed the geometric shapes for the radiator covers, which we cut on my 100 watt laser. A transformed room in this historic home in Round Hill, Virginia.

Day two of this custom bookcase install, with Jeff Welpott of Buildwell Carpentry. Today we added all the faceframe material over the cabinet-grade maple plywood, installed the crown molding, and applied a two-part epoxy putty to all imperfections and nail holes. If you zoom in you can see the putty effort clearly. Day three tasks include final sanding, and paint prep. Painting (primer, topcoats) will take about three days. Custom work, done right.

On the workbench (well, on the table saw at the moment), here is a replacement table top, in solid quartersawn white oak. The clients asked that we reuse the original table's legs, aprons, and undermount table slides (all of these components are off camera).

The new top is comprised of two table halves, and two table leaves. Brass alignment pins and table locks, mounted under the top, fit and secure the parts into a whole. The top measures about 48" wide by 88" long.

Next step is to begin to apply finish, in this case, a stain followed by polyurethane.

Completed built-in bookcase ensemble for clients in Round Hill, Virginia. Painted in place. Note geometric design on radiator screens. Designed by the client, and then cut out on my 100 watt laser. The remaining phase of this project is to install crown moulding, and paint the walls. Another great collaboration with Jeff Welpott of Buildwell Carpentry! What can we build for your home or office?

In the finish room, we built this solid cherry table top in 2010, from cherry milled from family property in Pennsylvania, as a gift to our daughter, about to graduate medical school. After 15 years of use, I refinished the top today.

Look closely at the wild grain of the cherry boards selected for this top. I am stunned afresh at the beauty of the cherry. Finish is a hard wax, two component oil. I used Rubio this evening, but also use Natura (essentially the same formula).
