From my MFA thesis show "Still to be settled" I tried to share my love of Aleppo and its beautiful ancient stonework in this body of work, see taimakrayem.com for my thesis statement and details about each piece, thank you my dear for being the best partner and thank you for all your help and support! Despite not being able to have a public show due to the circumstances, it was great to see it all together.

Personal identity is transformed and altered by the narrative of war. People loose a part of their individuality as they compare their stories to others. Friends in loss can be on the same page in their grief and consolation, but facing the rest of the world the individual feels isolated, trapped in a repetitive loop, personal development is transformed into regression and confusion.

"Surface Tension" 2019.


They took their last resort for survival, escaping through the sea. They’ve weighed the risks and chose their best option. The boat that was meant to rescue them caped down and took them to their new welcoming home, their “land of safety”. They’ve been finally granted the “right to asylum.” No visa required, all are welcome, even the Syrian refugees.

Carved drawer pulls reading "ya laylee, ya layl" "oh my night, oh night" repeated as they're traditionally sang in the opening of a song.
One of the most enjoyable part for me in traditional music as it's a way for vocalization but also a way to share and set emotions in a music, taking the listener through feelings of melancholy, joy and sadness all in one song.
The opening of the drawers reveals photos of bits and parts of Bayt Ghazaleh, a seventeenth century palace in Aleppo that was heavily damaged by bombing and fighting.

"House on a dream" chest on stand, the rail represents one of the facades of a 17th century house in Aleppo, Bayt Ghazaleh, this façade along with other parts of the house have been damaged and demolished by bombing.

“Warmth is comfort"
…Even in the summer.” Sometimes at the cost of the trees, the furniture, the antique pieces, passed down from grandparents to grandchildren. The romancing of these objects is for the faint of heart, watching with horror from a distance. The ones left behind are survivors.

Healing by secondary intention occurs when the sides of the woumd aren't opposed, healing must occur from the bottom of the wound upwards.
