Hello! Ross here, just dropping by with a few things we've been up to. We got a monumental amount of rain yesterday, so Monday we made a push to get our storage onions out of the ground and these beds flipped to our fall storage roots. We could've left the onions for a bit longer in the field, but come August each day counts for a lot of plant growth, so getting the storage roots direct seeded and germinating asap and getting those onions out before all that moisture drove our decision to do it early in the week. We've also just wrapped up a careful cleaning of the front tree line at the farm, with a nice buttoned up layer of landscape fabric on top of a layer of Frith made compost. Managing the perennial elements of the farm has been a very eye opening experience for me. I think they are an essential part of what makes this place unique and exceptional, what makes it go "beyond" organic farming into something hard to define or label, but gosh they take a lot of work! It's hard to quantify the benefit of this tree line in traditional terms as it doesn't currently contribute much to the finances of the farm, but it provides fruit, shade, and habitat for the various humans and critters that call this place home. Last week we visited Jonesfamilyfarm as part of our apprentice education program where we saw a beautiful property of dynamic no-till veg production and permaculture inspired edible forestry. Getting to visit other farms has been a personal highlight, seeing the different takes on veg production has really brought home to me the fact that there is no perfect method and adaptations to specific land or markets are a must for every farm. I really appreciate these busy farmers taking the time to show us around and answer our questions! I'll round it out with a photo from our pick your own flower plot, where new colors continue to surprise me every week as our season progresses.
