Spice is up and taking care of her baby. Thanks for prayers for her recovery. B4134 is also nursing him so he's a happy full baby. What is better than having two mothers to love him. Praise the Lord πŸ₯°β€οΈβ€οΈπŸ₯°

Weekends are quickly becoming my favorite days, because weekends are group days! Bringing in some extra hands this month for garlic season 😊
We made short work of another pickle seed crop harvest this morning, cleaned out the garlic barn, smashed tomatoes, threshed sunflowers, and... cleaned lots of garlic. The group energy makes these long, monotonous jobs so much more fun. It turns it from a task to a Season.

First cucumber seed crop is safe inside! First we ferment the seeds and pulp in barrels for 3 days, then decant, and pre-dry the mostly clean seeds in the greenhouse for a few hours. We like to use a shop vac to suck away excess water from underneath the screens, which really speeds up the drying process. Finish drying happens in my living room where the cute little ones can't get to them (not if Moose can help it)

The flower block was just so dang pretty this morning, it didn’t really look real. What a place to start a super productive day. Flowers were harvested, beds were prepped and planted, old crops were cleared, thistles were pulled, and crops were irrigated. July is no joke so we take our moments of zen wherever we can. ✨

What a week! We finished digging the garlic on Wednesday and Thursday thanks to our crew and several other helpers who came to assist with prying it out of some really dry clay soil. Thanks guys, you know who you are (because of the blisters and emotional trauma πŸ˜¬πŸ˜…). Now it’s all hanging in the barn which I can’t help but think of as the garlic cathedral in my head every time I walk by. It’s magnificent! πŸ§„πŸ™ŒπŸ» Some other favorite moments from the week included picking some gorgeous dark blue nigella, having lots of tomatoes for chefs and market alike, making a fun little host stand arrangement for one of our restaurant clients, and seeing that the sweet taters are running! July is a beast. Hope all our farmer pals are hanging in out there. πŸ‘ŠπŸ»

Thursday are for planting. 🌱🌱🌱 This is a new schedule for us this year, as we constantly struggle to keep up on planting in the height of summer when Everything. Needs. To. Happen. Right. Now. 🚨 Three people and a waterwheel can knock out a weeks worth of planting in half a day which is pretty dang sweet. And yes, even on our tiny farm which requires some extra careful maneuvering with such a long implement to not hit everything πŸ˜… we think it’s 100% worth it! Huge thanks to all of the other farmers I chatted with before making the jump (especially you for the reassurance that it would work without a creeper gear) and to sbeck1203 for giving us the final push to purchase it last winter! No looking back!

Hello! Ross here, just dropping by with a few things we've been up to. We got a monumental amount of rain yesterday, so Monday we made a push to get our storage onions out of the ground and these beds flipped to our fall storage roots. We could've left the onions for a bit longer in the field, but come August each day counts for a lot of plant growth, so getting the storage roots direct seeded and germinating asap and getting those onions out before all that moisture drove our decision to do it early in the week. We've also just wrapped up a careful cleaning of the front tree line at the farm, with a nice buttoned up layer of landscape fabric on top of a layer of Frith made compost. Managing the perennial elements of the farm has been a very eye opening experience for me. I think they are an essential part of what makes this place unique and exceptional, what makes it go "beyond" organic farming into something hard to define or label, but gosh they take a lot of work! It's hard to quantify the benefit of this tree line in traditional terms as it doesn't currently contribute much to the finances of the farm, but it provides fruit, shade, and habitat for the various humans and critters that call this place home. Last week we visited Jonesfamilyfarm as part of our apprentice education program where we saw a beautiful property of dynamic no-till veg production and permaculture inspired edible forestry. Getting to visit other farms has been a personal highlight, seeing the different takes on veg production has really brought home to me the fact that there is no perfect method and adaptations to specific land or markets are a must for every farm. I really appreciate these busy farmers taking the time to show us around and answer our questions! I'll round it out with a photo from our pick your own flower plot, where new colors continue to surprise me every week as our season progresses.

Welcome to High Tunnel 4. Where we create a tropical understory environment of 100 degrees F and 90%+ humidity here in temperate Maine.

The inhabitants of this house are Ginger, Turmeric, and, you guessed it, Okra. Also underseeded carrots which will be pulled shortly.

This is an unheated house, but this time of year the sun readily warms it up, even with the shade cloth on it, and the automated rollup sides don't open until the temp hits their highest setting of 99 degrees.

Okra is producing beautifully in these conditions, and ginger and turmeric will put on most of their growth between now and October, when we begin harvesting them.

It's fun to make use of high tunnels to grow these crops that are otherwise poorly suited to our region.
