No Sound of Water - research [9/9]

Salt kingdom

To exchange and equate water with salt fascinates us far beyond the optical properties of this phenomenon. These two substances are in many ways opposites, and replacing one for the other opens up in this context a whole spectrum of possible interpretations. Metaphorically, water is the ultimate element of life. We are mostly water, a fluid, chaotic, mobile element synonymous with life itself. Water is cyclical, it evaporates, it rains and again. It does not have a structure, no crystal there, no order. It is the antithesis of the Salt of our story, this alchemical Earth.

The salt waterfall thus dispenses of water altogether, supported in this task by the use of an extractive machine, borrowed and adapted from the processing industry, as a testimony of our intelligence put to Salt’s use.

The fall physically enacts Salt's agenda of domination, using humans to gain motion and transforms the long exposure image of the waterfall into reality, as a filigrane, delicate, domesticated fall. The rise is thus complete. The ultimate element of the living is replaced by the ultimate element of the dead. Salt's kingdom is established.
