Hesitation here and suggestions welcome. This side table hasn’t sold. At first I thought it was because it’s hard to sell a single and also because it is a rather large size and we live in a city where homes are small.

But now I think it’s the color. It’s funny because this was about to be a cream color but at the last minute I grabbed a blue. Wood wasn’t not an option here.

What color would you do?

(And again to try to ward off the paint haters — wood wasn’t an option for me with all the chunks missing from it).
Fine Arts Furniture, ‘mid-century traditional’ piece from Grand Rapids, MI.

This one was supposed to be for someone else but somewhere along the way, I changed my mind. Solid wood. Early 1900s. Stunning details that stood out on their own like the quarter sawn sycamore drawers and the hand cut fretwork on the doors. I knew the direction right away and fell in love. Dark, simple, a little quieter than where it started.

I painted most of it because the wood had some issues and I had a picture for how I wanted to live with it. Some pieces you restore and let go. Some you keep and make your own.

Colors: : Warm Embers (the soft black). Melange One: Epihany Ecru (the off-white). And yes, my office wallpaper is fuzzy textured.

The furniture restoration and refinishing community has been so welcoming to a newbie weekend worker like me. Shout out to Aaron Moore and community for all the help along the way.

I have two midcentury modern pieces in the works for the full restoration treatment (no paint). So stay tuned for some (hopefully) stunning reveals!

This desk was left on the side of the road. My friend sent a photo and I rushed to grab it.

Made by the John Breuner Co. of San Francisco, it had great details buried under a tired finish. So I stripped, repaired, and refinished it by hand with a lighter touch this time. Color: All-In-One Paint by Heirloom Traditions “woodrose”

It didn’t stay with me for long. Claimed before the work was even done.

Small table. Satisfying reset.

This one came back to life over two quiet days in the garage. A simple project, but a chance to try a new technique of carefully using wood bleach to lift some old stains before refinishing the top.

The base was restored in Heirloom Traditions “Iron Gate” and the wood grain stunned in General Finishes water based stain “hickory.”

Quiet work after a very full day.

Before: worn, scratched and overlooked.
After: restored, strong, and dare I say...adorable?

Solid wood. Good bones. Stripped, repaired, and refinished by hand.

Already in its next home.

This secretary desk started out damaged and dull.
But there was something about this one I loved.

In the video, I share a few lessons from bringing it back — what worked, what didn’t (there was a fair amount of that), and what I’d do differently next time.

There’s something steadying about working through each step by hand, even when it means redoing one or two of them. After a very full day, this is where I reset.

Restored slowly.
Good furniture deserves the time. And sometimes we do too.

This piece has passed through a lot of loving hands.

I got this Jacobean dresser from another mother and son. She had refinished it years earlier with her own mom, and her son helped me move it out of the house and into my car.

Then it became a project with *my* son. While home from college, he tackled the hardest parts—removing damaged veneer, sanding, scrubbing—hours of real work together in the garage.

Life interrupted the timeline. I traveled for work, he went back to school, and this weekend I finished the piece myself.

The top couldn’t be saved, but the body was solid and full of character. It’s now finished in All-In-One Paint by Heirloom Traditions “Iron Gate.” Replacing the original hardware was hard, but missing pieces left no choice—and the new pulls stay true to the spirit of the original.

This is why I do this. Keeping things out of the landfill, quieting my mind, & creating beautiful things.

An origin story of sorts.

Last summer I found this table on the side of Old Cazadero Road, the brand namesake.

A solid wood table by Sterling Furniture Company, built with care and nearly forgotten. I stripped it back, slowed down, and let the original craftsmanship lead. One of my favorite details is the butterfly leaf, tucked neatly inside — practical, thoughtful design that’s stood the test of time.

Now it’s refinished, functional, and already in its next home.

Sustainably refinished by Old Caz New. Built on second chances.
