Emanuel Lutheran Church grew from the Swedish Evangelical Lutheran Immanuel congregation organized October 10, 1871, with about forty communicants. Early worship was in Swedish. A frame church was built in 1872; in 1890 the congregation bought the Elm and Perry Streets corner and completed a brick-veneered sanctuary in 1891 (dedicated 1893). The present address, 220 West Elm Street, is that site. The Gothic pew—dark-painted ends with pointed-arch panels—belongs to that late-nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century building; a 1907 date fits furnishings from those years. The church later joined the ELCA’s Northwestern Pennsylvania Synod.

Titusville is the birthplace of the modern oil industry. On August 27, 1859, Edwin L. Drake and William “Uncle Billy” Smith struck oil at 69½ feet on Oil Creek. Drake’s drive-pipe method proved oil could be produced commercially. The first boom followed: the town exploded in size, refineries and tool works appeared, and the first U.S. oil exchange opened here in 1871. For a quarter-century the Oil Creek valley led the world in oil and set the pattern for drilling and marketing worldwide. The Drake Well print above the pew marks that history.

In the next 60 days will be making drops in Tennessee through area like Memphis, Nashville, Murfreesboro, Chattanooga... This & many other historic pews are available.

The Trinity Episcopal Church of Monroe Michigan removed a few of its original pews to make room for handicapped seating. We were lucky enough to get them.

The benches were hand made with wood dowls & hand-forged nails. Look closely at the photos to see dowls & paneling. The seat is a single hand-scraped plank.

The church has its beginnings in 1831 & boasts having Tiffany stained-glass windows. It's also the home of George Armstrong Custer (a famous leader in the Civil War & died at the Battle of Little Bighorn.)

Custer's wife had a bride's maid that attended Trinity & parishioners like to think he may have made a few appearances at the church.

Nestled on the banks of the Mississippi, construction of the Saint Irenaeus Chapel began in 1864. This former parish is on the National Registry of Historic Places.

Local tie-in: Troops from this town fought at the battle of Pea Ridge and would have returned and likely attended this church. Many Irish Catholic soldiers returned to Lyons and helped complete the structure which opened in 1869.

Summerfield M.E. Church was built in the heart of Milwaukee in 1904. Markings on a few of the pews say "Gimble Bros. Milwaukee Wis."

The four leaves of the quatrefoil can represent the four Evangelists (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John). It can also be seen as an extension of the Cross, symbolizing hope and faith, proportion, balance, symmetry, and wholeness.

This particular pew comes with a custom cushion.
