In 1996, my husband, Rob and I interviewed for our children, Robert and Lindsay to attend Mt. Pleasant Christian School in Chesapeake, VA. Unbelievably, I had seen this little Mennonite school when I was 18 and thought to myself, āI wish my children could grow up like thatā even though I did not have any children at that time. When I met the principal, I knew it would be a long-term relationship and we joined the church, Mt. Pleasant Mennonite that sponsored the school. We began to learn and grow our family just like I had dreamed. Those friendships would last until this day and be part of what is now Genuine Amish Furniture in Beaufort, NC.
The building we are currently leasing on Live Oak Street in Beaufort, has always been unique and of interest to me. Every time I drove by, I thought someone should put a really interesting business in there. I saw the āFor Leaseā sign in June of 2019 and asked about the possibility of leasing. I immediately called a long time friend from our Mt. Pleasant days, Carol Broadwater. Carol opened her own Amish furniture store, Amish Originals, in Farmville, VA, twenty years ago. She was so excited to share her expertise and help us start our own Amish store in Beaufort. We immediately signed a lease and made plans to meet with Carol and learn all we could about the business.
In the mean time, our daughter, Lindsay was living in Charleston and was ready to move home and partake in this new adventure. We travelled to Farmville and new instantly that this was going to be a good fit for us. With Carolās help we designed our first pieces of furniture to fill our showroom and began to establish relationships with our Amish builders. We invested our money and our time and just knew that we could bring the Amish experience to our community and that people would love it.
In nine short months we are so blessed to see where we have ended up. We love our Amish friends and builders and the relationships we are building with customers. The products, process, and atmosphere are so rewarding. We work 6 days a week doing something we truly love. The store has become not only a custom furniture store, but also a unique Amish experience right here in Carteret County (and surrounding counties).
