Time to start the day.
Shop time this morning after tea. Lots to try and get done!

Another day in the shop…
Did you know David Gilmour also played bass guitar on quite a few of Pink Floyd’s songs. Roger Waters was their regular bass player (and also wrote along with Gilmour on many hits). But Waters many times didn’t play on the actual studio albums, that was Gilmour. At least half the songs is Gilmour on both lead guitar and bass (and many time lead or shared vocals).
I thought that was a neat tidbit. Waters and Gilmore famously grew apart and parted ways…probably due to some perceived power struggles over who was the band leader.
Seems like the best bands always had inner turmoil…and that lead to some fantastic music. Pink Floyd was in this category for sure.

I let the dye dry over night and then starting to sand off. Using 220 grit here as I don’t want to be too aggressive.
I think I’ll need to take this down a tad more and possibly reapply the black dye one more time….then sand again.
The goal is to make sure the end grain (which has the “curl” look) soaks up the black and deepens the effect.
After that, I can apply some color fade…I think.

First carve with my new body style done! I’ve been getting a huge helping hand learning the software from my good buddy Tye . He’s been an invaluable with the whys and hows of this whole guitar making process. Appreciate it so much!
The cut things out very well. I am seeing where a spindle with a 1/2” collet would be beneficial though. That’s something for future Josh to look into. Right now, I’m glad I’m to this point.
Next up will be the neck and fretboard, along with a fair amount of sanding. I’m leaning towards grain filling on the body so I can get a nice smooth finish.
Ok, onward!

I realized I never put a “finished” picture up in the squares of this build.
Now, this turned out pretty decent…but nowhere near where I hope to be a few years down the road. I’m going to keep learning and watching friends that know way more than me. Hopefully I’ll keep getting better with each build.
I do have a new build stating soon…should be a fun one and new design as well! (New for me ☺️)

On my recent trip to Texas (a few weeks ago), Tracy and I got a tour of Houston from some great friends! Clara and Don were so kind to show us some of the local scenery and food spots! What a couple of awesome humans and we are so glad to have become good friends over the years!
Next time we see them I’ll show them the Great Lakes! Summer in Michigan is a joy!!! Thanks Clara and Don, until next time!

Ok, couple things I learned today. My skills are getting incrementally better. Little by little. I was able to chamber this Padauk body blank and then cut the Curly Maple inlay without too much trouble (I mean…for a fella who hasn’t done it before).
I also learned to make sure I’m listening to how things sound during the cut. My router started to sound higher pitch and I noticed the chips were no longer chips but rather dust. So, I stopped the program and assessed things. My bit was coming loose in the collet. This created the dust vs. chips situation and also could have been a disaster if I wasn’t paying attention. Everything was able to be saved, but I have some chatter and a little chipper that will be tricky to fix.
All in all…not horrible. The CNC performed great. I should have made sure to tighten everything better after several hours of cutting.
Ok…not the worst day. Could have been better, but at least I learned a bit more! I’ll chalk it up as a win.

I was able to together a headstock design for this current guitar I’m making.

The curve follows the Fender Tele style headstock curve and the little cosmic star is a nod to the furniture style I enjoy the most! (Midcentury).

I’m also going to come up with a little design that goes along with this for further branding.

Whatcha think?

If you want useless info that doesn’t you no good…I’m your guy. Fun facts, tidbits, I love em’.
Here’s one I share with Jack while he visited me in the shop this week. If you ever need real help with real problems, I’m not probably on your list of people to call…but, if you need boring facts to put people to sleep at parties…that’s where I shine.
