2026 was a great winter we made some large steps in growth, cut some absolutely beautiful wood and worked for some awesome land owners who were amazing to work for. However with winter coming to an end, the skid trails getting muddy, and the road postings showing up we are hauling our last few loads of wood and starting to move equipment home for spring maintenance. As always we are looking to purchase stumpage from land owners as well as do any tree service, land clearing, or excavation projects that need to be done. The plus side to spring being my slow time is that I am only going in 3 directions at once instead of my usual 10 so I actually have time to get out to look at jobs in a timely manner.

I hope a few people were able to see past the keyboard warriors on the last couple posts and find the information shared informative. So here goes another one. The picture right here is a load of approximately 7 cords of firewood some land owners feel they are getting screwed on fire wood because it doesn't pay much to the land owner so hopefully a few people will enjoy seeing the breakdown. The load of wood pictured is worth about $1000 delivered to a home owner in my area of that money the land owner is getting 15 per cord so $105 the trucker will cost $300 to $400 to deliver it so now there is is $495 left on the table for the logger to cut it, limb it, and stack it so with a bare minimum of 150 an hour for an older machine that means it can't take more than 3.5 hrs to cut a load and have there be a profit. Bottom line is no one is no one is getting rich off fire wood it is a useful byproduct of cutting the better quality wood.

Probably one of the most miss used terms I hear from people who don't know much about wood is the term veneer in reference to nice quality logs. Below are 2 pictures one is of a top grade red oak veneer log that can pay a land owner $1,000 per thousand board ft or more for reference each of the logs with the blue paint and the black tags are about 250 bft each so those 2 logs will pay the land owner roughly $500 and the other is a saw log that is worth about $250 per thousand to the land owner. Veneer is a small percentage of the wood we cut in New Hampshire because all it takes is a small defect to nock it out of the veneer category and often times it is impossible to tell the exact quality until it is on the ground. This is also why it is important to have a logger who knows what they are doing with hardwood because one mistake when felling or bucking can turn a really nice veneer log into a saw log.

Edit it added pictures of the NH Department of Revenue's stumpage prices since some people were doubting the prices i had given for reference most of our work is done in Southern New Hampshire.

Probably the number one question asked by land owners is how much their wood is worth and their top concern is that they don't get taken advantage of by a logger. I thought I would take a little time to explain values. For example the load of wood in this picture is a tad over 10,000 board feet of decent quality white pine. This load should pay the land owner $1000 to $1500. The factors that can impact price are quality of wood and access. That's also not to say that all jobs can be paid for. Every piece of equipment in the woods is worth a bare minimum of $150 per hr, so if the cost to cut the wood exceeds the value of it it can not be paid for and sometimes we have to charge to cut it in certain situations. For people curious about values of wood the NH Department or Revenue Administration publishes average timber values quarterly that any land owner can look up.

The project this morning was to haul a sap tank for Alden Dill to the back of his sugar bush in preparation for this year's sugaring season. The forwarder was definitely the tool for the job on this one. Thankfully it went pretty well and I didn't end up the new owner of a shiny new sap tank with a great big hole in it.

Big thanks to Randy Nason for having the chains that were needed on hand at a great price. Tough to beat these.

Today's project, thinning an over crowded stand of pretty decent oak and rotten trashy hemlock to allow the smaller diameter oak trees that will be ready to cut in 15 or 20 years to grow better.

With frozen ground and a little snow to keep the wood clean we have been rolling loads of wood out this week. The new to us log trailer is definitely speeding up the trucking side of things.

A small area we cleared and stumped in Barnstead for a customer to park a camper in the summer. The new pc220 is makes short work of these smaller jobs we were in and out in less than a day on this one.
