Open the drawer of an antique chest, desk, cabinet, or sideboard and you may discover something surprisingly interesting.
Look at the corners.
Those small interlocking joints—often called dovetails—can provide valuable clues about how a piece of furniture was constructed and sometimes about its approximate age.
But there's an important warning:
Dovetails alone cannot tell you exactly how old a piece of furniture is.
Here's what they can tell you.
1. What Is a Dovetail Joint?
A dovetail is a woodworking joint made from interlocking, wedge-shaped sections.
When properly constructed, the pieces lock together and resist being pulled apart.
Furniture makers have used dovetail joints for centuries, particularly in drawer construction.
They're functional—but they can also reveal something about craftsmanship.
2. Hand-Cut Dovetails Are Often Irregular
On older furniture, dovetails may have been cut individually by hand.
Look closely and you may notice:
Slight differences in size
Uneven spacing
Small variations in angle
Tool marks
Minor irregularities
Those differences aren't necessarily poor workmanship.
They can be evidence that a craftsman created the joints individually rather than a machine producing identical cuts.
3. Machine-Cut Dovetails Changed Furniture Making
As furniture manufacturing became increasingly mechanized during the 19th century, machines could produce dovetail joints more quickly and consistently.
Machine-made dovetails tend to be more uniform than many hand-cut examples.
That can provide an important clue.
But don't make the mistake of thinking:
Hand-cut = antique
or
Machine-cut = modern.
It's much more complicated than that.
Machine-assisted furniture production has existed for a long time, and construction methods varied among countries, workshops and manufacturers.
4. The Drawer Bottom Can Tell You More
Don't stop at the dovetails.
Look underneath the drawer.
How is the bottom fitted?
What kind of wood was used?
Do you see tool marks?
Does the underside look consistent with the rest of the furniture?
Sometimes the areas that weren't intended to be seen tell us more than the beautifully finished front.
5. Look at the Back of the Furniture, Too
The back can be another revealing area.
A highly decorated cabinet may have magnificent carving on the front while the back shows simpler boards and construction.
That's normal.
Furniture makers often spent their time and expensive materials where they would be seen.
The hidden areas may therefore preserve useful clues about construction.
6. Examine the Hardware
Now look at the drawer pulls, locks, screws and other hardware.
Do they appear consistent with the furniture?
Are there unused holes suggesting the handles were changed?
Does one screw look much newer than everything around it?
Replacement hardware doesn't necessarily mean the furniture isn't antique.
After 100 or more years, repairs and replacements happen.
The important thing is to examine all the evidence together.
7. Wear Should Make Sense
Imagine a drawer that has been opened thousands of times.
You might expect wear around the pull, runners, edges or other contact points.
Natural wear tends to occur where people actually touched and used the furniture.
Artificial aging can sometimes create an old-looking surface, but genuine use often leaves more complicated clues.
Again, don't rely on one sign.
8. Never Date Furniture From Dovetails Alone
This is the most important lesson.
Dovetails can help you understand a piece, but they aren't a birth certificate.
To estimate age, consider:
Dovetails + wood + hardware + tool marks + construction + style + wear + finish
And when available, maker's marks, labels, documentation and provenance can add additional evidence.
The strongest identification comes from seeing how the clues work together.
The Most Interesting Part May Be Hidden
One of the pleasures of examining antique furniture is discovering that craftsmanship isn't limited to the decorative surface.
Sometimes you have to open a door.
Pull out a drawer.
Turn the piece around.
Look underneath.
That's where furniture begins to reveal how it was made.
