At Athens Stables, the architecture takes its cues from the rural buildings that have long belonged to this part of Texas. High-pitched roofs, East Coast cupolas and a simple white exterior give the twelve-horse stables a storybook quality, set against the wilder landscape of the Texan countryside.

October feels right at home at Tiny Boxwoods Austin. Light-filled rooms open onto the garden, shaded tables sit beneath the trees, and architecture and landscape come together to make the café feel tucked away from the city. A longtime Austin favorite, designed alongside Thompson + Hanson Landscape Architecture.

A weekend trip to Montana for a recent site visit and photoshoot. It’s always rewarding to return to a project and see how it has settled in, from the weathered timber and stone to the smaller moments within.

There’s a familiarity to McCallum that feels as though it has been there for some time. Steep rooflines, white stucco and arched openings meet slender steel windows, warm oak and rooms filled with natural light. Traditional in its references but restrained in its expression, the house finds its character in the balance between the two.

Reclaimed stone runs throughout Houston Oaks, its age and irregularity set against weathered timber and soft plaster. The materials give the house a sense of history, as though it has belonged to the landscape far longer than it has.

Pickwick draws from traditional cottage architecture through its pitched roof, slurried brick, and warm material palette, while clean lines and open, light-filled interiors give the home a distinctly modern character. Throughout, exposed beams, natural wood, and dark accents bring depth to a house designed to feel considered, comfortable, and lived in.

Tucked behind layers of mature planting, Montecito Bungalow feels quietly secluded within its setting. The landscape creates a sense of privacy throughout, framing places to gather, swim, and retreat while keeping the home intimately connected to the garden.

As the season begins to shift, a look at the hearths that anchor some of our favorite gathering spaces. From carved stone and reclaimed materials to more contemporary forms, each takes its cue from the home around it.
