Lago Vista Police Department Response to a Fatal E-Moto Crash

The Lago Vista Police Department is deeply saddened to report the death of a 14-year-old male following an e-moto crash that occurred Friday evening in the area of Outpost Trace and Thunderbird Street.

Lago Vista Police Department officers responded to the area and began an investigation into the crash. Preliminary information indicates the juvenile was riding an e-moto with friends, while not wearing a safety helmet, when he lost control and crashed. No other vehicles were involved in the accident. Despite lifesaving efforts by Travis County ESD1 Fire Department personnel and other first responders, the juvenile succumbed to his injuries. His family was notified and received assistance from victim services personnel.

The Lago Vista Police Department extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, classmates, and all those affected by this heartbreaking loss. We ask our community to respect the privacy of the family as they grieve.

The Jonestown Police Department, Travis County Sheriff’s Office, Travis County ESD1 Fire Department, and the Travis County Fire Marshall’s Office assisted Lago Vista officers with traffic control and securing the area during the investigation. We are grateful for their assistance and for the efforts of all first responders involved.

E-bike and e-moto safety has been an ongoing concern for the Lago Vista Police Department. Over the past several months, our officers have worked to educate young riders and their families about applicable laws, proper safety equipment, and the importance of operating these devices responsibly. Officers have spoken directly with riders and parents, shared educational information with the community, and conducted e-bike safety outreach.

This tragedy underscores why those conversations are so important. E-bikes and similar electric devices can reach significant speeds and can result in serious or fatal injuries when operated unsafely. We strongly encourage parents and guardians to understand what type of electric bike or device their child is operating, ensure that it is lawful for use on public roadways, require the use of a properly fitted helmet and other appropriate safety equipment, and speak with their children about safe riding practices.

The Lago Vista Police Department will continue working with our community, city leadership, and our local partners to promote e-bike safety and identify appropriate measures to help prevent another tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers remain with this young man's family and loved ones during an unimaginable time.

This week's trail spotlight: the Barton Creek Greenbelt.

It's one of the most-loved trail systems in Austin for good reason — miles of shaded singletrack, creek crossings when water levels allow, and enough elevation change to make it feel like a real workout without leaving the city. Hope your Labor Day weekend involved some good miles! Now that we're back to the regular routine, it's worth giving your bike a quick once-over before your next ride.

A few things worth checking after a weekend of extra riding: wipe down any dust or mud that built up on the frame and drivetrain, double-check your tire pressure (temperature swings over the holiday can affect it more than you'd think), and pay attention to any new noises — creaks, clicks, or rubbing — that weren't there before.
