The Chair Whisperer will be posting photos soon of another project. It is a small six board chest from around 1750-1790. With a mousehole in one corner!

The Chair Whisperer just started a restoration of an Empire era Secretary at Willard Memorial Chapel, in the classroom. Unfortunately the linseed oil and turpentine combination used for this process is a very strong smell. I got the first treatment done, but we have to postpone the rest of the treatments for warmer weather when the windows can be opened. It's an honor to be doing a piece for them. Willard Memorial Chapel is such a beautiful and historically significant site. If you haven't been there, please visit! They are open to the public Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The docents (tour guides) are enthusiastic and very informative.

My sister Mary found this at a local antique store, and it's a very interesting piece. It looks Victorian, but has tool marks on the turnings like you would expect with a manually powered lathe. Also, the top was turned on a lathe, and also has the tool marks. It is solid mahogany, with brass plated sleeves at the ends of the legs. The legs are held together with only two scews, one of which looks like a handmade iron screw. The other screw looks like a replacement. Start at the bottom of the page to see the photos in order. I clicked "Order by date taken" and it put the latest photos first.

This is a piece I picked up for $10.00. It is a cherry candlestand that appears to have been made in the early 1700's. There is a hand-forged piece of hardware that reinforces where the legs join the pedestal. There are also hand-forged nails in the top of the pedestal where it is mortised into the support for the table top. It also shows marks from the tools when it was turned on a lathe. On the unfinished areas under the support the table top shows marks of a pit saw. The candlestand had a broken foot and a split top. Which is why I got it for $10.00!

This is the second project for this customer. It is a pine bench with storage under the seat, made in a home workshop in the 1960's or early 1970's. The original finish was shellac.

This was The Chair Whisperer's first paying customer! This is a maple rocker from the 1930's. It had a varnish finish when it left the factory. Later, someone added a light coat of brown paint and the decals. Later yet more really dark brown paint was added to cover repairs that had been made. These repairs later failed. The paint that was added was at least 50 years old, which helped narrow down when it was made.

This table was made by someone who took 84 thread spools of different sizes, threaded them onto hand-forged iron rods, and made a table to imitate the spool furniture so popular in the mid 1800's. A unique piece.
