Maple is hard as heck to get an even tone, it usually ends up splotchy and nasty. The trick is to use a water-based dye stain.

Recently, I was honored to be asked by the fine arts department of an Atlanta school to design and implement a permanent art installation, the "Learning Tree."

Additionally, I gave a presentation to each class, wherein we discussed the importance of trees to humans and nature, wood as a sustainable resource, and using wood as an art medium. I followed up with a demonstration on the scroll-saw. Each class was a delight.

For the tree project, I used quarter-inch hardwood plywood veneers of various species as "bark", the dark-to-light tones representing sunlight and shadow.

The birds and leaves came courtesy of the art teachers and 5th grade students, I just cut them out and applied them.

My son Aden got inspired by the project, so he drew a few pictures on some cardboard that I had been using for templating. I picked a shark/whale character, cut it out, and incorporated it into a branch of the tree, as my signature.

Overall, it was an exciting and unique experience. Having performed carpentry for 20+ years as well as majoring in art during college, it certainly seems I have been training my whole life for this moment! I'd love to do it again.
