A piece of lumber will tell sometimes you what it wants to become. This naturally modified (or disfigured), depending on your view, piece of black walnut said clock on one end and a charcuterie board on the opposite end. What is the center of the piece of wood saying to you? (This is where you make a suggestion by commenting on this post.)

The live edge charcuterie board is 11 inches at the widest point and 23 inches in length. The polished chrome handles provide a nice contrast and increase functionality. Walnut burl is always classic and suggest the design.

The clock is 11 by 15 inches and protrudes about 2 inches from the wall. The natural cavity that hides the clock stem runs through the thickness of the board. The clock mechanism is a battery-powered quartz movement.

Sometimes a design pops into my mind as I am falling asleep or waking in the early morning. In the book "Life" (excellent read about Keith, Mick, and the history of the Stones), Keith Richards stated that he kept a tape recorder next to his bed. Occasionally he would wake and record a riff that came to him in his sleep not knowing he had recorded until he turned the tape recorder on the next day. I am not comparing my creativity to that of one of the best living rock-and-roll musicians, let us not forget Paige, Plant, and Led Zeppelin, but creativity is what musicians and craftspeople have in common. I don't build everyone of my designs because some are simply ugly. Others would require standing on my head to produce (metaphorically). They don't work. Some designs I build because I like then and I don;t worry about appealing to an audience.

The table centerpiece pictured below is a simple design, but I think it is attractive. It is made of western red cedar, native to the Pacific Northwest. It is an easy wood to work, and the fact that it has a very pleasant aroma is a bonus. One of the first pieces of furniture that my son and I built together was a red cedar coffee table. I enjoyed sharing the project with him immensely.

This centerpiece measures 3.25"D X 18"L X 3"H. The five two-inch diameter votive candles are staggered in height from the tallest in the center to the lowest at either end. It is finished with urethane and wax for added luster in candlelight. If you are wondering, am I am certain that some of you are, the top arc is a 48" radius, 8' in diameter, and the bottom is 18" which corresponds to a 3' diameter. Interesting concept, isn't it?

Large mixed hardwood cutting board (this one features red oak, walnut, and mahogany). This board measures 10"W X 20"L X 1.75"H (thickness). This provides the chef with lots of work area.

I helped a good friend of mine with the design of this floor lamp (I offered minor suggestions). I think that this turned out beautifully. Mahogany with oil finish, note how the legs slightly taper from the base to the top. The lamp is 56 inches tall, with a 16-inch width at the base. I believe in the end that only six lamps were built; this lamp being the prototype. I will not duplicate another's work, but I intend to build and offer a lamp with a similar aesthetic (clean, elegant, and sophisticated design).
