Scott Meek Woodworks

Scott Meek Woodworks I create fine furniture and fine tools. I am passionate about creating beautiful items through the medium of wood.

I grew up around the construction trades, specifically in residential construction, so I've just always been around wood. The first time I mitered a corner trim joint together tightly, it changed my life forever. Since that point, I've been drawn to the detailed side of woodworking. I went into business for myself as a trim carpenter, which then progressed to custom cabinetry. My journey as a wood

worker has now brought me to a smaller, more focused outlet. This was brought on by my first encounter with a finely tuned hand plane. After my first ultra-thin wood shaving, I was completely in love with hand tools. Creating something with hand tools develops an intimacy with the wood that you can't get any other way. It forces me to focus more intently on what I am doing, how I use the grain of the wood or what type of joinery I will use. The pieces for sale here are all results of this journey I'm on. Each piece is created with passion, focus, and a desire to learn something new. It is my hope that when one of these pieces ends up in your home, it will bring years of cherished enjoyment, beauty, and peace.

Tomorrow, November 2, from Noon to 5pm, you should go check out the West Asheville Community Artist Tour. I am so incredibly proud of all the work that I have been able to do with ! It has been so inspiring to see so many of our lights, furniture, Cris' paintings, and more come together in a cohesive way. Stop by on Sunday, check out our work and all the other artists around the neighborhood, and be inspired yourself! And maybe go home with something beautiful and support local artists at the same time!

Oh, and I also recommend stopping by my friends while you are out and about for a delicious sandwich! Tell them Scott sent you. :)

I have been building these record crates for myself for the past few years now. From the beginning, I had intended on finishing them with various shades of milk paint and offering them for sale. Now I am finally doing just that! More colors to come soon. Available in unpainted Poplar also (this is how all of my personal ones are currently).
Unfinished are $195, painted are $265. Custom wood options are available also.
I build these with a French cleat system so that they are easy to hang on the wall, or they can be stacked. Whatever works for you.

See this one in person at . You should visit there anyway! It's an absolutely wonderful store that I am so glad we have here in Asheville! Hoping for many exciting things in the future there! Stay tuned.

Another Three Plane Class happens next month! There are only 2 spots left for this class. Join me in Asheville and, with my hands on instruction, build three wooden planes that will become your most cherished tools on your bench. The class takes place July 18-23. Materials are included in the cost, as is lunch every day at a local Asheville restaurant.
At the end of the class, you will have a smoothing plane, 12"jack plane, and 22" jointer plane. It is such a fun class to teach. I hope to see you there!

I turned this Maple Burl bowl yesterday and am absolutely thrilled with this part that dried so quickly, leaving this incredibly tactile depression. Every time I've walked into the living room today and saw this on the coffee table, it has made me smile.

Look who Christina and I ran into at a concert at the Orange Peel last night!
I mean, it's not THAT big of a surprise since it was their daughter's concert, but it was still great to catch up with Roy. Really missing woodworking events where I would get to hang out with him.

Easily the largest top we've ever pulled the scrub plane out for. When you have to flush up some glue joints that didn't behave, you do what you gotta do. Much quicker than sanding it all the way!
By the way, I love my scrub planes. You would too!

It is giveaway time! I still have open spots in both of the Three Plane Classes I have scheduled for this year (one in July and one in October). So I'm enlisting y'all to help me try and fill those spots. Reshare this post with the hashtag, and you will be entered. The drawing is for your choice of a Block Plane or a $300 gift certificate toward a class or other plane of your choice.

Of course, if you are interested in making three planes like the three in this picture (smoothing plane, Jack plane and jointer plane), sign up for one of the classes! It is such a great time, and you will leave with planes that will become the core of your hand planing work. It is a week long class, with lunch provided at a local Asheville restaurant each day. We have some damn fine food here. Personally, I think that is as good a deal as the planes. Mmmmm, food...

Oh, and just to sweeten the pot a little more, if you can prove that someone signed up due to your reshare, I will make it a Smoother that you win instead of a block plane.

End grain shavings in Cherry are so fun!
My block planes have a 37° bed angle, so they excell at this. That is the same cutting angle as a metal body low angle block plane, which are bevel up, bedded at 12°, with a 25° primary bevel on the iron.

My block planes are great for cleaning up edges, planing chamfers, flush planing joinery, or anything else that a plane that fits perfectly in your hand might be useful. And it will be much more tactile while doing it.

Playing with some wire brush texture again, this time on a White Oak and Ipe Smoothing Plane. Quite different from the Maple plane I did this on previously. Gives it a weathered and worn look. I like it. Will anyone else?
