Jason D Fine Furniture Fine Furniture Woodshop

04/29/2015

As of right now, my shop is in a moving phase. My new job with Quis Machinery selling woodworking machinery is truly a job I was made for and one I am thoroughly enjoying.

What that means for my woodworking is that I will be able to explore the craft more once my shop is set back up.

Thank you for all your support.

Back on Facebook and ready to show you all the work I have been doing since my last update. Check out this Modern Desk Unit by Jason D Fine Furniture!

Sorry for the extended absence, hope to be back and updating more now. I have completed lots of work in the past couple months. I will begin with this one, completed in early November for a family in north Asheville. I would like to do something similar to this for myself one day. I had lots of help on this one. Thanks to Russell Gale, Michael Waldeck, Alex Reznikoff, Chuck Hess, Charlton Bradsher and of course, Gary Rawlins.

Today and tomorrow I am delivering two completed pieces. Gary Rawlins and I built the bar table, pictured on previous occasions. I built the bed pictured here by myself, though I certainly consulted with numerous people along the way. At the time of this picture, the headboard is under a blanket in my office. It has been upholstered with Raffia. The legs were actually turned by a friend of mine, Makena Hess.

Both of these pieces were commissions designed by the client and their interior designers.

These aluminum bar clamps are incredible. They weigh much less than the typical bar clamp and still apply the needed pressure for most jobs. The hanging method is VERY technical. ;

Two pieces of wood hung horizontal and parallel. The top one has a screw coming out at a 45 degree angle approximately every two inches. The limitation to this hanging method is that the clamp must be closed, but that just makes them look neater on the wall anyway.

To get these clamps for yourself, purchase them from Dubuque Clamp Works. Not that it will save you any money, but tell them I sent you- maybe it will save me some money as I still need some of the longer ones.

Personal Touch- I have been putting the final details on two pieces to go out next week and I cannot help but think about the path to getting here and the support I have received from my wife, Corey.

When you are putting on the final touches you do not want anything to mess up the surface. Coffee needs a designated spot away from stored pieces, take off your belt buckle prior to lifting large objects. Remove any rings or watches that may scratch at your "beautifully imperfect" planed surface.

I created this little ring holder to hold my wedding ring. Corey and I designed our own wedding rings. They were both made by Jennifer Jenkins of Miya Gallery in Weaverville.

No matter where you work, at an office desk or at a bench, you should have more than just pencils and paper or planes and chisels, conveniently at hand. Comment back and share with me some of the personal touches you have placed in your work space.....

Not very exciting, I know. But as hot as it has been this summer, these two machines might be the most used in my shop.

This may throw you off a little, but you asked for pics of the inside and this is the first thing you see as you walk in. There are a few woodworkers who have been coming by the shop and using the space. I wanted to make sure they all felt welcome and had a place to put things, so we found some old lockers at a second hand office supply store. Perfect.

The couch, my wife asked me to throw away when we met 5 years ago, so now it is in the shop.

The metal drawers were an idea from my friend Gary. There are about 5 sets of those around my shop, they are perfect for storing anything from tape, danish cord, finish rags and many more odds and ends. This set actually has folders as it resides in the office. Picked them up at Habitat Home Store for around $20 each.

Some pictures of the inside of my shop were requested. Let's begin with this one, the bench area. There are a few cool aspects to my bench area that my classmates from IP will recognize, I will let the rest of you discover these details when you come visit.

A craftsman's workbench is a very important tool. Mine is a new Ulmia (made in Germany). At school we were under the impression that you could not get a new Ulmia with square dog holes. This is actually not true. If you order the largest size (90" long) you can get square dogs holes. I ordered mine from a guy in Colorado who distributes for several companies, Ulmia included. I can get you his contact info if anyone is interested.

One night a week for several weeks I went over to a buddy's shop (Chuck Hess) and he mentored me in refurbishing an old Oliver 144 Jointer. We had to wait on the new Byrd Tool Corp cutterhead that we just installed last night.

This jointer looked ROUGH before, but now it looks as good as it did the day it came off the show room floor in 1937!!!

I will put an album on FB as soon as I can get all the pics off my phone onto my computer, but for now, here is the end result.

For those who were having trouble seeing the whole thing, here it is in the final glue-up. You can also notice the radius we gave to the corners. This glue-up occurred last Thursday. From here, Gary and I will be applying finish (a black wood stain to the bottom) and distressing the top (at the request of the client).

Working with Gary Rawlins on this project has been a true pleasure. His knowledge has really been invaluable in the process of making this piece and I look forward to working with him on future projects.
