For many woodworkers, the drill press
sits quietly in the corner of the shop — a tool used occasionally for simple
holes. But in the hands of a master, it becomes a gateway to precision, safety,
and expanded creative possibilities. In this free course, Brian Boggs draws on
more than four decades of chairmaking and fine woodworking to share how he
relies on the drill press for accuracy and repeatability in ways that a hand
drill can’t deliver. From his early years cutting mortises with brace and bit,
to upgrading through multiple machines, Brian explains what features matter
most in a drill press and why.

You’ll learn how to:

· Choose between bench and floor models, and understand which
features really count.

· Set up and square your drill press for reliable, repeatable
accuracy. * Control feed rates and chip removal for clean, glue-ready holes.

· Use fences, stops, and setup blocks for precise spacing and
repeatable results.

· Apply these methods to real projects like chair joints,
bending forms, and fixture building.

This is not just about drilling holes.
It’s about building habits of precision that carry over into every part of your
woodworking. Whether you’re brand new to the drill press or looking to refine
how you use it, Brian’s practical demonstrations will help you see what’s
possible when you treat this tool as a cornerstone of accuracy in the shop.

Living in western NC, we see gorgeous mountain views all the time. This splendor drives folks here from all over the world and drives architectural design for many who want to surround themselves with the glory of this scenery. I recently had the privilege of building a table for such a home where even the dining room was oriented to soak up the mountain view while dining. The inset in the ceiling set the position of the table. The view set the position of the seating. Seating on the ends of the table was clearly out of order. This opened up a unique opportunity to play with a waterfall table design. It cleaned up the clutter of chair legs and really invited the eye to swim down the curly maple river and dive into the mountain scenery through the windows. I’m quite happy how this worked out and so were the clients.

This is the definitive guide to spokeshaves and drawknives—finally free to the public after 20 years.

In the early 2000s, Lie-Nielsen Toolworks partnered with master chairmaker Brian Boggs to film this in-depth workshop, expertly captured by videographer Wolfgang [Last Name]. For two decades, it was a paid staple in Lie-Nielsen’s catalog—but thanks to Deneb Pulchalski and the LNT team, it’s now available to all.

Why This Video Still Matters in 2024:

Same techniques Brian teaches today—proven methods for sharpening, handling, and mastering these tools.

Wolfgang’s brilliant camerawork—discreet angles that make every cut and adjustment crystal clear.

A testament to timeless craftsmanship—Lie-Nielsen’s American-made quality (since 1981!) mirrors Boggs’ own precision.

Note on Tools: Some tools shown are rare, but the fundamentals apply to any quality spokeshave or drawknife.

To Lie-Nielsen Toolworks: Thank you to Tom Lie-Nielsen, Deneb, and the entire team for their integrity and generosity. This video is just one example of why woodworkers worldwide trust—and love—this iconic brand.

We write this letter from Dorchester, SC, where we are enjoying a bit of a respite from the chaos in the wake of Helene’s wrath on Asheville and the surrounding area. You all have heard the news, and we can assure you that the destruction in the town of Asheville is every bit as bad as the news portrays it. We are grateful for our good fortune in that our house and shop remained above river levels. It was a close call for the shop, but the only water that got in seeped through the back wall.
