A former client just sent me a photo of a Shaker table I built for her ten years ago, in black walnut. Almost forgot how much fun I had with that project.

TV CABINET for SALE. $2,499. Price negotiable; serious inquiries only. I built this puppy 15 years ago and now that the client is moving, I've reacquired it to find it a second home.

Custom-made cherry breakfront cabinet features glass shelving, xenon downlighting, and a central opening large enough for a sizeable TV (36” H x 50” W). Rich molding details are hand-applied. The classic breakfront design helps minimize the visual depth of the central cabinet (18” interior). Depth of side cabinets is 14”. The piece is built in three sections which are easily disassembled and reassembled with just a few screws, and rests on levelers that can accommodate any unevenness in your floor. Total dimensions are 96.75” H (height of center cabinet) and 90” W. Width of side cabinet openings is 14”; width of openings above the TV is 24”. Height of base of TV opening is 26.75”, which puts the center of the screen at around 47” (depending on TV design), just about optimal for seated viewing.

Open shelving immediately above and below the TV provides ample room for audio and video components. Glass shelving above and to either side of the TV is 3/8” thick, with beveled edges—beefy enough to support significant weight. Height and spacing of shelving is fully adjustable, with holes for pins spaced every 1.5”. 4 adjustable glass shelves per side cabinets and one adjustable shelf per opening over the TV.

Drawer sides are made from .5” solid maple, with .25” maple-veneered plywood bottoms. Corners are dovetailed. Drawers and the rest of the piece are finished with a durable catalyzed lacquer that shows off the dovetails and wood grain to nice effect. Interior (usable) height of drawers is 5.75”, sufficient for CDs, or DVDs laid horizontally, spines up. Drawers are provided with simple removable wooden slat partitions (see photo), which keep your CD, DVD, and cassette collections organized while remaining highly customizable.

The two doors flanking the drawers are inset (flush with the surrounding face of the cabinet) and feature solid cherry frames rabetted at the rear to accept fabric, glass, etc. Piece is sold “as is”—doors have no panels but would be easy enough to modify. Doors are hung on fully concealed European hinges that open to 165D.

Interior puck lights are black trim, recessed into the cabinet ceilings, and protrude only 1/8” or so, and are 2.75” in diameter. Lamps are 20W xenon, which provides the sparkle of halogen with less heat. These come with a transformer, which is hidden between the top of the cabinet and the interior cabinet ceiling. Switch can be mounted to the cabinet itself, although cabinet is currently provided with a plug that would ideally be connected to a switched outlet, which would allow you to simply plug the piece into the outlet controlled by a wall-mounted dimmer switch.

Used but in remarkably good condition. Original cost was over $9,000, delivered and installed.

Here's a sake cup cabinet I just finished for the same folks for whom I made the bench pictured earlier, in sapele. Openings are just 3" square and the tolerances were far more demanding than my usual work. Those dados are only 1/16" deep. EXACTLY 1/16" deep. I think I lost 3 pounds just from the concentration required.

Visited an old friend recently and was reminded that I made this bench. It matches the Arts & Crafts paneling in his living room. So nice to see how my children are doing.

Family room in Newton. Only took me and my assistant 3.5 days to install all nine cabinets including two built-in closets with triangle doors, plus related moldings. A LOT of moldings. Under budget. Will look better painted. I might actually be getting good at this stuff. Too bad I plan to retire at the end of the year...

Progress photo of a classic country hutch with a MCM twist, in white oak. This is unfinished—doors need k***s and the whole thing needs a clear finish. Consider this the "before" photo. "After" to follow. That grain is gonna pop!

Lower cabinet hides a power strip with surge protection, accessed through a wire grommet in the rear of the counter. I left clearance behind the drawer for routing appliance cords.

You don't want to know the price of white oak right now. Right up there with walnut and Western red cedar. Apparently, the Covid quarantine gave people time to acquire an appreciation for bourbon (who knew?!), leading to a heightened demand for the quality white oak to make the barrels used in distilling. A bourbon connoiseur informed me that most barrels are only used once and then sold for aging other libations. Good thing nobody’s making booze with poplar barrels or I’d be out of business tomorrow.

What have we been up to lately? Custom-fitted doors and moldings under a staircase. A coat rack very similar to one I did little over a year ago. Picasso is supposed to have quipped, "Good artists copy; great artists steal." So what does it make me if I'm stealing designs from myself?
