Fourteen-year-old Hannah Helmer of Seward, Nebraska, harvested a truly massive bull elk that stands as the Nebraska non-typical state record, officially green-scored at 430 6/8 inches on the Boone & Crockett scale and ranking among the top 20 elk ever recorded. This bull wasn’t just a youth accomplishment, it surpassed the previous Nebraska state record and is one of the largest elk ever taken anywhere! Congratulations Hannah on an incredibly Nebraska elk!

Are these the dumbest poachers of sll time?
Two men from Lawtey, Florida, Aaron Griffis, 24, and Taylor Wise, 23, were charged with multiple poaching and theft violations after they broke into a deer farm in Lake Butler on at least two separate occasions, shot and killed deer inside the fenced pen at night, and then posted images and videos of the incidents on Snapchat and Facebook. Wildlife investigators with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said the social media evidence and tips from the public helped build the case, and both men now faced serious charges including grand theft of livestock, trespass, breaking or injuring animal fences, taking deer at night, and other misdemeanors and felonies stemming from the deer farm poaching.

A big reason deer hang so close to roads, especially in winter and early spring, is salt. When roads are treated, that salt washes into the shoulders and ditches, creating a reliable mineral source right when deer need it most to balance electrolytes, aid digestion, and recover from winter stress. On top of that, road edges are regularly mowed, which creates tender new growth and classic edge habitat that deer naturally gravitate to. What most non-hunters don’t realize is how many deer are already there, often just inside the treeline, standing a few yards off the pavement, waiting to step out. They’re not drawn to traffic; they’re drawn to the combination of salt, trace minerals that leach into the soil, and fresh vegetation that doesn’t exist in the same way deeper in the woods. Roads unintentionally concentrate exactly what deer are looking for, which is why you see them standing there so often.

A former Indiana DNR conservation officer is now facing poaching-related charges himself, which is what makes this case stand out to hunters. According to reports, a former Indiana Department of Natural Resources officer, who later became a Turkey Creek Fire Territory captain, was arrested after allegedly illegally killing a whitetail deer on private property without permission, then fleeing from an on-duty conservation officer and later battering a police officer during the investigation. The incident escalated well beyond a game violation, resulting in felony charges, including battery on a public safety officer. For hunters, the headline isn’t just the arrest, it’s that someone who once enforced wildlife laws is now accused of breaking the very rules he was paid to uphold.

Can we help? That’s the question asked by Trevor Moran looking for a deer head that means a lot to him!

This is a long shot of a question. Just curious if anyone has any leads. My dad shot this deer back in 2005. He got it scored in 2007 at Ohio big buck. Later my dad had to sell it due to hard time with money. Was sold in Delaware Ohio and was told it was going to a museum. Willing to pay a fair amount to get this deer back. Would be greatly appreciated thanks!

If you know anything, send me a PM and we will let him know

One thing I keep hearing more and more is that deer are getting bigger because high-fence deer farms have accidentally released genetically superior deer into the wild herd. I don’t know if that’s true, but I do know deer have escaped before. I’ve even personally talked to someone whose neighbor bought does from one of the top high-fence operations in the country to breed bigger bucks, and those does later got out. Those same does are now living behind his house, and he’s keeping quiet because he believes they’ll produce bigger bucks on the landscape over time. Again, I don’t know if this is widespread or even biologically meaningful, but it’s being talked about a lot. So I want to hear from real hunters, not agencies or press releases: are you seeing this? Are escaped high-fence deer actually influencing the caliber of wild deer where you hunt, or is this just another hunting rumor that sounds good but doesn’t hold up?

Everyone knows that wild pigs, feral hogs, and domestic pigs are technically the same species, Sus scrofa. What rarely gets talked about is how modern wild hogs actually ended up the way they are. A USDA study found that roughly 97% of wild pigs sampled in the United States were hybrids, carrying genetic material from both domestic pigs and European wild boar. Those two lineages bring very different traits to the table. domestic pigs were selectively bred for rapid growth and high reproduction, while European wild boar were shaped by survival, aggression, and toughness. The result isn’t a “new species,”

So the next time you hear someone talk about “hogzilla” or “Russian wild boar,” it’s usually not some mysterious new animal, it’s just a wild hog with a higher percentage of European wild boar genetics and less domestic pig mixed in. Same species, different genetic emphasis, and that difference shows up in size, behavior, and how hard they are to deal with on the ground.

Nature doesn’t need our help to be brutal, but sometimes human trash makes it worse. This coyote is a reminder of why littering isn’t just ugly, it can directly cause animal suffering. Nobody should want to see wildlife die like this, and leaving trash on the landscape is careless at best. That said, coyotes aren’t exactly innocent bystanders in the woods either, they hammer rabbits, ground-nesting birds, fawns, and just about anything else they can catch. Two things can be true at once. We should take responsibility for our mess, and if something unfortunate is going to happen in the wild, it’s hard to lose sleep when it’s a predator that’s been wiping out everything with fur and feathers.

Dumbest poacher award!

This gentleman shot a giant 28-pointer off an 8-foot high-fence game ranch, then crawled through the fence, lopped the head off, and tossed the head back over the fence leaving the rest of the deer to rot because meat is apparently optional when there’s a giant rack involved.

But the part that really seals the “Dumbest Poacher” crown is that after all that, he had to celebrate his own criminal masterpiece on Facebook. He proudly grinned with the buck, posted the pic, and bam, the internet did in about five minutes what law enforcement might have taken months to figure out. It’s like he invented the first self-busting wildlife crime social media career, a perfect storm of poor timing, poor planning, and very poor judgment that will forever be a reminder that if you’re going to break the law, don’t broadcast it!

When you hear the garbage truck coming down the street so you need to make a run for it 🏃‍♀️

This Red-Bellied Black Snake was seen using the bin as a safety shelter! This photo does an incredible job at showing those belly scales that aren’t always red! Genetics are pretty cool huh?

Thanks for the pic Heather!
