Let's talk about rubber roofs for a minute. Many rv owners never think about their roofs unless they have an active leak in them. Well you should walk or have someone walk your roof at least once but ideally two times a season minimum. We usually recommend once in the spring when opening the unit and once in the fall before putting it away. This ensures that potential and active leaks are identified and taken care of before big problems arise.
The other thing we recommend is roof washing and using a UV protectant .When rubber roofs age and get sun baked they become chalky. The chalk shows up on your hands, knees and boots when inspecting the roof. It's not just some residue it's your actual roof breaking down and that's why UV protectant is important. It stops the UV harmful rays and reflects it like sunscreen for your roof. It removes chalking and conditions the roof and leaves the UV fighting film behind to protect it.
This brings us to the next bit of information and that's RV roof covers. Many use them and have good luck others have tried them and they turned to shreds. Our honest opinion is not to use them. We understand what they are intended for but I can prove and have seen on multiple units the damage they cause to painted side walls and end caps and also they degrade and wear the edge of your roofs. The pictures I will share show the roof chalk I was talking about and the pictures also show the edge wear on the corners they have chaffed thru the rubber and was cut right thru to the roof decking causing a lot more damage then you would honestly think it is doing.
Now I'm not here saying you can't use one or you shouldn't that's up to the end consumer. If you have had good luck then continue using it. If you have used one and it is torn to pieces or it caused damage then you know the pain they can cause plus the additional cost of buying one.
Bottom line is to check the roofs and avoid costly repairs before they happen by some preventive maintenance.
