As part of National Work Zone Awareness Week, our president, David Feise, led a safety discussion about work zone safety at a customer’s job site with more than 25 Skanska team members, we well as representatives from FDOT and DRMP.

“The most dangerous person in a work zone is a distracted driver,” said David. “It is our job to stay aware of our surroundings, wear proper PPE, and use positive protection devices such as truck-mounted attenuators & concrete barriers when working on heavy DOT projects to keep our team and the public safe.”

David also partnered with a member of Skanska’s safety team and a representative from DRMP to raise public awareness for NWZAW at the local YMCA, encouraging people to slow down in work zones, pay attention to the road and their environment, and eliminate distracted driving.

The importance of maintaining focus while driving, especially through work zones, cannot be overstressed. Work zones, with their inherent complexities, alterations in traffic patterns, and presence of workers, demand heightened awareness and reduced speeds from drivers to ensure safety. Distracted driving, be it due to mobile device usage, eating, or any activity that diverts attention from the road, significantly increases the risk of accidents. These accidents not only endanger the lives of drivers and passengers but also pose a grave threat to construction workers and pedestrians in these zones. By staying alert and minimizing distractions, drivers contribute to a safer environment, ensuring that roads remain safe passages for everyone, including those who work tirelessly to maintain and improve our infrastructure.
